Going to Political Conference, Need Some Talking Points

This is my first post here, I am a high school student, my uncle and dad are huge gun guys so naturally I am also. I'm heading to this political conference/summer school program in California, and most likely a majority of the kids there will be liberals, (im highly conservative.) We had to choose our topics for which we wnated to debate, and i chose this prompt.

"Resolved, that the 2nd Amendment should not be interpreted to grant the right of private citizens to possess handguns."

I am clearly against this notion, and believe that it is our constitutional right to be able to defend ourselves. I was wondering what insight some of the board members might give me on this topic. I have already done some research and know some of the basic numbers, but if anyone wanted to help out it would be much appreciated. I'm going to be outnumbered on this issue most likely as this is in Northern California after all.

id really appreciate any help from you more knoledgable gun-folk. while ive gone to the range many times, and have some ideas and feelings on the subject I am nowhere near as knoledgeble as y'all.

How about a neat quote? "A free people ought to be an armed people", Gen George Washington. If that does not spell out the Framers intent as to the Second Ammendmant, nothing will.

But just for fun...One of the main arguments is that the 2nd is a "collective right", usualy no explanation is given, because, well liberals don't need to explain themselves, that would require a belife in personal responsibility. No lets run with that.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Nowhere does it say "collective". Furthermore, the concept of a milita was every able-bodied man from the age of 18-45. So every man between the ages of 18-45 is granted the right to keep and bear. But they ment the national guard. Pure unmitagated BS. The NG was not developed until the 20th century. The forefathers were insightful men, but they could not see into the future.

The Framers ment weapons that they had at the time. So, if the 2nd can't be modernised, then none of the others can either. Becasue if the Framers could not have envisoned Assault Weapons then they could not have envisioned radio, TV or the internet, so freespeach does not apply to those mediums(the best way to piss off a liberal is to not only show how lame their attempts at taking your rights are, but assert that their favorite right should similarly be taken).

Without a real live liberal here to bring up stupid arguments that I can pick apart, i forget most of the gems that they have. If someone else can remember another BS argument and post it, I will be glad ot give this young man some more counter-points.

Here's a cut-n-paste from my homepage---I've gotten a few remarks over the years about this subject and my thoughts on it...

Anti-Gun Activists would like to have you believe that every gun is just waiting and conspiring somewhere deep within its mechanical workings for some poor shmuk to wander by, and then **BLAM!!**. OK people, listen up. GUNS DO NOT KILL PEOPLE!!! Human carelessness, arrogance, ignorance, and just plain stupidity kills people. A gun is a mechanical device, period. Some would like to have you believe it's a mechanical device that has one purpose--to kill. Oh really?? I think the intent or action is dependant upon the user, not the device. A car is a mechanical device, and can be far more deadly than a gun, people prove how dangerous a car can be thousands of times every day. Take a gun, load the magazine, and put it on a table. If left alone, it will still be right there, holding the table down and nothing more thirty years later. SO WAKE UP! Worry about PEOPLE, not the gun.

I read a radio transcript a while back between a female radio host and an Army General being interviewed. The topic was introduced about the American Boyscouts Association teaching boys how to shoot B-B guns

----Host: "You're condoning the training of these boys to shoot. Do you realize you're equipping them to become cold killers?"

----General's Response:"Well, you're already equipped to be a prostitute, does that make you one?"

----Interview Over---- GO ARMY!!!

Ok, so what about all the armed robberies? Well, we have C-stores with Lexan cash cages, automatic lockdown doors with steel bars, timed safes, and signs posted everywhere that "there is less than $100 in cash drawer at all times". How about posting a sign that says "Cashier is heavily armed, and trained." Ok, might have pricked a few nerves with that one. Get over it. Try this one.

---Think like a criminal for a moment. It's dark, late at night, and you're scoping for a house/garage to break into for a nice score on some free stuff. House "A" has a pick-up in the driveway that sports NRA bumperstickers and a gun rack in the back window (empty of course). House "B" has a Volvo in the driveway and sports a bumpersticker with a peace symbol. Now who do you think is going to be the likely victim here?

What about all the gang-related shootings? Do you honestly believe gang violence is a result of guns? If so, get your head checked. Gang violence is a direct result of poor/non-existant parenting. Teach your kids. Guide them, instruct them, get involved withthem, and for ****-sake discipline them! I learned very young the concept of action vs. concequence. Without that, I don't care if you get rid of every gun on the planet. The problem will not end. Knives, chains, baseball bats, whatever else will just take the place of the gun. Ever been cracked upside the head with a Louisville Slugger? One good pop to the dome will kill you as fast as any bullet ever could. Want to solve the problem? Deal with the source, don't shift the blame by making it the fault of the firearm used by the by-products that results from overpopulated stupidity in large groups.

thanks for all the posts so far guys, its all very appreciated. i was recently at another program in washington dc, but we had a good balance or conservatives and liberals. we actually even got to go to the NRA headquarters and have a seminar there. Also went to the Swiss embassy. Switzerland is quite heavily armed, and they have an extremely low crime rate. Plus Hitler and Mussilini left them alone in WW2, is this a coincidence? I think not.

Don't fall for the argument that says the Swiss were not attacked by Chermany and Italy because of its gun policy.

Reality is the Swiss were the bankers the Chermans and Italians used to finance the war. It is considered bad form to attack one's banker.
