Hey Yall, I'm going to Elmendorf AK in January for 2 weeks. Anyone have any advice as far as places to see, gun shops maybe. I will be there on temp duty with the military.

rr41mag,
Be sure to take along some warm underwear. ;)

Go down to Seward, (I think that is how it's spelled). Nice docks with fishing boats, mountains in the background and sometimes a bright moon. Have a good camera and film available. If possible a medium format brand. such as Hasselblad, Mamiya or Bronica.

I would love to find a good job there. Told some head hunters if they ever find something there, call me back.

January will be very cold, but you can also check out Denali national park. Very cool to see Mt. McKinley. If the clouds let you.

Temperature varies around 10-15 degrees between the high and low. At least it was 2 weeks ago.

The Great Alaskan Bush Company is a must see, Great Northern Guns, Rabbit Creek Range (outdoors & heated) on Sunday afternoons where the big bore guys burn mass quantitys of powder! henry

At the Fairbanks Denny's they give you a card testifying that you ate in the world's northernmost Denny's. If you get down by Denali and it's open, Sourdough Breakfast across from the Princess Lodge has the best blueberry pancakes in Alaska. You'll also want to pick up a T-shirt at Skinny Dicks Halfway Inn so your friends and neighbors will know you have class. Forgive me but the address escapes me at present.

When the guys take you to the Bush Co, make sure you do NOT go to Bush II. It is a dive.

Also, don't miss Chilkoot Charlie's on Spenard.

HMMM cold,....thermals...OK....seward yep a must I love fish beside I can bring it back on the aircraft...great Alaskan bush...OK......great northern guns!!!well thats gotta go at the top of the list!!! chilcoot Charlies sounds like a bar. Since I don't drink and will probably be the designated driver well why not! I like watching people get drunk and do stupid stuff. Thanks guys

Chilkoots and the Bush company are both world famous, so you have to go there. On a good day you can see Mt Mckinly from base, if it's not a good day, you wont even see it from the park. Rabbit creek range, is just like anyother range, I don't really see going to someplace like that for a vacation. GunRunners is a good gun shop.
Where do you live now rr41mag?? Ever been to AK?? What weekends are you up here, we may go shooting, try and blast you an AK dog or something, depends on dates though, Jan is looking pretty hectic from here :) Mellamobobo@hotmail.com

Denali Park is mostly shut down during winter. The Bush Co. is definately a must see. Take in the show at the Fly By Night Club in Spenard (right near Chilcoots). Very funny stuff and at that time of year lampoons Alaskans rather than mostly tourists. Several good brew pubs downtown including Humpy's, Glacier Brewhouse and one other whose name escapes me. Good downhill skiing at Alyeska in Girdwood. Have fun!
