I'm leaving on a trip to China tomorrow. I don't expect to being anything on the internet while I'm gone. I'll see what I can find out while I'm in China. how the Chinese police are armed etc, Back in three weeks.

Enjoy your trip and go eat at the world's largest McDonalds. One hell of a country to visit, but I would't want to live there.
 
If you're in Beijing, might as well visit the Great Wall since it's only about an hour north. And while en-route to the Great Wall, might as well stop by Norinco and play with some machineguns, SMGs and real assault rifles. I posted instructions on range info somewhere in TFL.

BTW, many police are unarmed and some only carried pistols (Tokarevs). I've also seen police carrying smgs in Tibet.
 
If you've ever been to the Great Wall before, skip it this time. I found out the hard way that, once the initial awe wears off, the Great Wall is a major pain in the arse -- an all day deal, and then you've got to climb up eighty kazillion stairs to boot. If you can already say you've been, do something fun instead -- go to Wangfujian or something.

Key phrases to know:

Wo tingbudong -- I don't understand
Mei You -- we don't have it
Qing ni zai shou -- could you say that again, please?
Qing ni bangzhu wo! -- Please help me!

The first one is the most useful, I've found.. :)
