Going to Boulder - what to do?

I'll be spending some time at NIST next week in Boulder, and just in case I have a little free time, is there anything there for a TFL'er to do? (From reading these forums I know it's a Commie Mommie stronghold, but maybe the town isn't a complete write-off yet?)

The wildfires are pretty well contained now. With the rain over the last couple of days, I'd bet they're just about out.

If you like to eat and drink, there's a lot of good restaurants in Boulder (Jax Fish House ($$) and Q's ($$$) are a couple of my favorites). If the weather is nice, there's also nice hiking close to town. There are a couple of trailheads up near NCAR and several up Baseline near Chataqua. I'm sure the folks at NIST could give you plenty of other tips.

Downtown Denver is only a 30 minute drive and there's lots of nightlife there. If you can get away for an afternoon, try and catch an afternoon baseball game at Coors Field. The Rockies are playing at home all next week and have an afternoon game on Thursday. Otherwise, there are four night games scheduled. Tickets aren't too hard to come by.

As far as firearms related things, there's a Highpower match at the Boulder Rifle Club on the north edge of town (yes, there are guns in the Socialist Paradise... at least for now) on Saturday 9/23. There is also a gun show at the Denver Merchandise Mart on 9/23 and 9/24.

proximo - thanks for the info. I'll miss the shows and the match, since I'm arriving Monday and leaving Friday. :(

I was last up there around 5 years ago, and I think I ate at Jax. (Little place, unimpressive from out front, but oyster bar near the entrance and regular seating in back?) Good seafood though just about as far from the ocean as you can get, washed down with Pete's Wicked...

I believe Tom Horn is buried there. Sure could use a 'few good men' like him these days. You might go visit him.

Been awhile since I was there, but downtown Boulder used to be a pleasant afternoon. Lots of college students doing street shows for change.

Estes Park and good place and Big Thompson's Canyon is a nice drive too. Coming into Boulder from Denver at night is really a treat to see Boulder lite up. Lots of back roads and hiking trails. I believe there used to be an observatory up in the Flat Irons by Boulder. Nice golf course! As mentioned, a day in Rocky Mountain National Park is great.

Basically, not much to do! Enjoy, I'm jealous.

P.S. Cripple Creek is a nice little gold mining town with gambling. However, it's a good 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive I think.

Hank, the suggestion of Rocky Mountain Park is a good one. Its an hour or so north of Boulder. The elk are buggling and the aspens are changing colors. You can't imagine a more beautiful and accessible place to be in the fall.

The place you describe sounds like Jax. Its on the far west end of the mall. Don't worry about how far it is from the ocean, I guarantee you the seafood in the Denver area is as fresh as you'll get in most places that aren't right on the coast. About 15 years ago, someone started flying in fresh seafood from the coasts and everything changed overnight. Now you can find fresh stuff just about anywhere you look.

If the weather is nice, you might want to take a drive on 113, 72, and hwy 7. These connect Boulder and Estes Park by a circuitous route, and the aspens are beautiful this time of year.

Those are my favorite roads around here for after-work motorcycle rides.

Also, there used to be a place called Colorado Mining Company, in Denver. I swear they had the finest prime rib and lobster I ever done did et. I never hurt so bad from eating so much in my life.

Amen to the "fresh seafood". You can get some of the best in the states in that area.

Buffalo Bill Cody is buried on a mountain right outside of town. Really neat site. Visit Soldier of Fortune Magazine, go to the downtown area at night and see where all the Hippies went!

I'm hoping to move there within the next few months with my employer paying the bill. Can you believe I'm wanting to leave Texas for a couple of years? The only thing that keeps my home state from being perfect is - no ski slopes.
Well, I ain't leaving my babies behind!

Yes, but are there any good gun museums? I'll be in Boulder in Nov. myself.[/quote]

I'll be an hour away by then (over in Greeley, moving in three weeks). Drop me a line and I'll drive over and we'll get some grub!
