I have bought a new stock for my sks about 2 years ago. I got the lower/main stock replaced easily. The other piece by the gas chamber on the other hand is IMPOSSIBLE !!! There is no visable was to remove it without breaking the wood which I really dont want to do since both peices are in very very good condition. Besides that fact if I did get it out I would not be able to get the new piece in.

Help in SKS land.

I assume you have removed the gas tube/handguard assembly by rotating the catch on the right side of the rear sight.

There is a rivet that holds the rear ferrule of the handguard in place. You need to drill out the rivet head so it can be driven off the gas tube with a punch. The rear ferrule will come off and the wood handguard can be removed. When re-installing, use a mild steel nail filed to the shape of the rivet and peen the rivet head to secure the rear ferrule.

You have to remove the ferrule (pin) on the rear metal piece and this means replacing it with a new one. Very carefully grind off the peaned head and using a punch slightly smaller push it out. Not the best set up but the only one I have found that works without damaging anything.
