Glocks at 3 miles???

Neglecting air resistance, a projectile launched at 1200 ft/s (45 degrees to the horizontal) should have a range of about 8.4 miles (look it up if you don't believe me). Allowing for air resistance and taking it easy on the Glock owners, it should be feasible to hit a piece of plywood at 3 miles with a G17, child's play with a Glock 20, right? OK, OK... we will allow the use of a scope if you must.

Any of you Glockophiles willing to try?

say 9mm,
How much energy is left in it @ 3.5 miles with say 1/4 mi interval readings?

How much does this change with each increasing degree over 45 up to 65 angle horizontally?

Just thinking out loud here. I don't know about the proper angle of trajectory. If the calculations are done correctly the bullet would lose all horizontal momentum right at the end of its trajectory. At this point, exactly at the point of impact, the bullet would be falling purely due to gravity. You would have to lay the target on the ground facing up

I would imagine the bullet would be tumbling by this point, making the resistance very hard to calculate.

Assuming a perfect cone of dispersion, ie: 1" group at 100 yards turns into 2" at 200 and 3" at 300 etc. (Which is often not the case), you would have a 2" at 25 yards pistol shooting into a 422.4" group at 3 miles, or roughly a 35 foot circle. So...no, in you little well crafted gotcha, it could not be done under the parameters posted. I wonder how many Glockophiles saw that right off.

Getting maximum range sans air resistance would require sucking the air out of a very large area.

Oddly enough, the ONLY thing sucking the air out of anything right now is an increase in silly, and in some cases strident, US VS THEM threads regarding Glocks.

Getting very tiresome.

Jhenry has put the hammer on this, as far as I'm concerned, not just for Glocks, but for ANY handgun.

What next? A thread titled "If Glocks are so perfect, why can't they sink a battleship like a 1911?"

Closed.
