My first CCW firearm was a Sig Sauer 229. It was my first handgun purchase and I was very impressed with its fit, finish and its justifable reputation for reliability. The DA trigger was a big plus. It was an excellent choice and I was very pleased. Glock was not even a consideration because is was ugly and cheaply made of plastic, IMO.
As I became a more active shooter, I searched for a better alternative. The new H&K USP .40 varient 1 filled the bill for me. The controls were superb and I could it carry cocked and locked. The advantages of a SA trigger had become clear to me. The plastic frame became a plus instead of a minus. Cleaning with simple green and water was a really big advantage. It was an excellent choice, and I was very pleased.
Now that I was becoming more experienced, everyone told me that the 1911 was it. Of course it needed the attention of a master pistolsmith to be really great. After much research, I entrusted the task to Joe Bonar at Novak's and became the proud owner of an outstanding Combat Commander. It was an excellent choice, and I was very pleased. So pleased in fact that I had Kurt Wickman at Novak's build me an outstanding Browning High Power. I was incredibly pleased.
BUT, my wallet was bleeding heavily and I was making everything, including routine maintainance, overly complicated. The pride of ownership, however overcame a lot, but I knew that the price was very high indeed.
One day at the range, a fellow shooter let me try his box stock Glock 23. I though why not, at least I can say that I have tried that ugly piece of plastic junk and confirm the true superiority of my other firearms.
Needless to say, the proof was on the paper and I was shooting better and faster with the $400 Glock, than my high class beauties.
I may not be the smartest guy in the world, and it took me a lot of time and treasure to figure it out, but I now know that Glock is the BEST for me. It is an excellent choice. I am very pleased.
AND the more you shoot them, the BETTER they LOOK!
Now that Steyr M40 may be worth a look...
