Went shooting today. One of my friends had just bought a G19. I've never been a big Glock fan, having shot them three or four times, I was never really impressed, but it wasn't really serious range work, more like just plinking. In fact I was kind of bummed to learn that the department I am testing with only allows 9mm Glocks. (I was hoping they would let me have a 1911). :(

But today I shot the heck of that G19. To test how well a particular gun works for me, I like to fire four of five shots center of mass at ten yards as fast as I can, from the holster. I figure that that is usually a good test of about how the gun will perform for me in a semi-realistic scenario.

Four rounds in a little over a second. I had to look twice, centered just under the x ring. All four holes where touching!!!!!! Whoa. I had four witnesses, now my co-workers think that I'm a great shot. :) I was super impressed, and it wasn't really a fluke, I shot it the rest of the afternoon, and got some great groups.

So I guess that you Glock guys aren't making this all up. And I don't feel so bad about being issued one anymore. Just thought I would share.

Another convert! Great to hear it. I've just added Glock 19 to my inventory--my new carry gun. What's interesting is that since I already own a Glock 17, I didn't want my pro-Glock bias to interfere with selecting the best carry gun. So, I EXCLUDED the Glock 19 from my list of possibles.

The Walther P99, while a really nice gun, is roughly the same size as my Glock 17, making it too big for my carry gun. (I'll still buy one someday)

I liked the compact SIGs, but they're not as light as the polymer-framed guns. A serious contender though.

The Browning Hi-Power and I have a problem with hammer bite, and like the Walther, it was too big. Size also eliminated the CZ-75B, though someday I'll also buy one of these.

I looked at a S&W Sigma. Note: NEVER did I consider buying one, I merely saw it sitting there in the case, and my eyes grazed it--which is as close to buying a S&W as I'll ever get now.

Finally, I picked up what I originally thought would be my choice--the H&K USP compact (the P7M8 was out of my price range). To my surprise, I didn't like the grip at all. It's too narrow for my large hand, the grip angle is way too upright for me (used to shooting that Glock), and those little nubs are sharp!

So, after a month-long selection process, I asked to see the Glock 19. Sold!

Now I have to go holster shopping... Anyone have recommendations?

Four shots from the holster in a little over a second, I am impressed. That's faster than Enos, Leatham, Plaxco, or any of those other world class 1911 shooters with speed rigs and big bucks at stake. I am really impressed...

Ankeny,

I bet he meant that the four shots were delivered in about a second AFTER he made the draw. Four shots in a second from a Glock 9mm is no problema...

Ankeny, I was counting the time of the shots, not the time of the draw, and even that was an approximation. I'm a pretty slow draw.

Sorry if I mislead you, but you can search my posts, I have never claimed to be very good at anything, in fact I tend to be self depreciating here at TFL because I occasionaly get to shoot with a few other TFL members, so if I ever bragged or exagerated too much you can be assured that they would call me on it. :)

Tango, to bad you missed the cz75 compact. Nice gun. I like my G19 also. It is the first handgun I ever owned and I still have it. This weekend it failed to go into battery twice. First malfunction in 10 years (though I think it was my son limpwristing). Think it may be time for a new spring. :)
