Glock, Smith...

Well this is my first post. I will be movin to Philadelphia in about 5 months. I had questions about CCW permits and requirements:

First of all I'm 20 years old but will be applying for a CCW once I turn 21 (by that time I will already be in Philadelphia). Is there a set time that you need to live somewhere to be considered a resident? Considering I have to be a resident of Philly to apply for a CCW there. Also can someone tell me where I can get information on applying for a CCW in Philadelphia? As it is different than other cities in the state of PA.

This will be my first gun. If I was concealing it on me obviously I would need it to be small enough to do so but I don't want one of the really small compact guns. I want a pistol, not a revolver. With that said, what do you think are some of my best choices that would include: power, accuracy, reliability? I really like the look of Glocks and Smith & Wessons. But don't know much about any other guns. Can someone give me some ideas so I can check some pictures out?

Also when purchasing a gun, would it be better to go to a store in person or just buy online? If in person, would it be better to go to a general gun store that sells all different kinds or a gun store that specializes in the type of gun that I am lookin for?

I can't address the PA ccw laws, but I can certainly help point you in a good direction as far as selecting a handgun. If you like glocks, that is a good, practical, place to start. Since your question is so broad, I think you should take a look at this page and do all the research you can. Better yet, go to a gun store and try a few out. My personal favorite manufacturers are Colt (for the 1911), HK (for the USP), and Sig (for the P220, P229, and P239). See how each gun feels in your hand, and how instinctive the aiming is for you. You probably won't have a chance to shoot it.

Oh yeah, what's your price range?

Welcome to TFL. :)

^ Thanks for that link to the page. I am goin to check it out right now. I will also have to take a look at the guns you mentioned. As far as price range...there really is no range. If I really want a certain gun and it costs more than others, I will definitely pay the extra amount of money to get the gun I really want rather than a gun I can just deal with.

CCW in Phila

Hi Big Dan,
Getting a CCW in Philadelphia is fairly easy, provided you have a clean record/no mental issues/ not a fugitive, etc. You have to go to 990 Spring Garden, the second floor. Be sure to bring two forms of proof of residence (credit card bill/ bank statement) your drivers license, a 19.00 money order, 2 passport photos, (You have to pick up the application at Spring Garden, I do not know if it's online.) You will go there with all your paperwork, and sit down and go through a series of questions with the person behind a desk. Questions are like: ever convicted of a felony, ever used drugs, etc) They will fingerprint you, and then do a background check. The background check takes about a month and they will send you a letter of approval (If everything is clear) You will go with the letter to 990 and get your photo taken and put on the license. That's about it.

^ Thanks for the info. Do you live in Philly? I would imagine so, seeing as how specific you were with the information. In any case, I will definitely be applying for a CCW when I get to Philly (5 months or so). I was thinkin about which gun I would like to have as a concealed weapon and also my first gun and I was leanin towards the Glock-19 9mm. Good choice for a CCW?

...Glock-19 9mm. Good choice for a CCW?
Excellant choice of CCW. Need to feed it quality ammo. Need a good holster/belt or two. Need extra magazines.
Need a class or three and a thousand rounds downrange under the supervision of a knowledgable tutor. Hopefully one who is certified by competant authority.
Probably need a second handgun as a backup (2 is 1 and 1 is none)
Don't scrimp on Gun, Ammo or Lawyer. Or training.
