Glock slide swapping

Ok, I know we have a lot of Glock experts on TFL. I have a quick safety question about swapping slides.

A friend of my mine (not me) just bought a second slide for his 2nd gen G19, but get this the slide is from a G23. The G23 slide came with it's own barrel and mag and seems to work quite well.

Is this thing just a kB waiting to happen or what? Is it safe, to do this kind of slide swapping on Glocks? Unless I'm wrong the 2nd gen G19's are not nearly as structurally reinforced as say a 3rd gen G23.

Oh, one more thing. This person is aware that this is not recommended by Glock and it will void the warranty. Since other things not recommended by Glock have been known to blow them up (lead bullets, reloads). The big question is, is it safe?

What do you think?

P.S. this is not a provocation to start a flame war, just concerned for my friends safety, that's all.

The 40*&* and 357 sig just need to swap barrels since they are both based off the 10mm cartridge.

I think the 9mm uses a different locking block than the 40 would. If you dismantle a glock and look at the part held my the pin above the trigger this is what I mean. I am looking at a 20, so some 9mm might not have it. Not the pin that holds the trigger assembly, some glocks have a pin above this.

That is the next thing. Until now, and I do not know if they hit stores yet, glock 9mm had a two pin design in the frame. this is weaker than the 3 pin in the other calibers. Glock changed this for simplicity, and now you can safely use a 9mm frame for 40*&* with the right changes. I have only read this and have never seen it done.

Old 40 *&* were not able to handle the 357 sig when it came out. Glock upgraded the 40*&* guns to handle the stresses. I have an older 22, and it will not handle 357 sig for very long without problems.

Personally, this person should check things out a little more if he values his hands, eyes, and maybe life.

Why is he putting a 9 mm slide with a .40 S&W gun.

I am no expert, but at a guess he may experience extractor problems. The case sizes are different.

As long as you stay in the same size catagory Full, Mid, Compact... the frames are all the same. The only differences are the slide, barrel, and mags.
For example if I have a 10MM Glock, full sized... I could with swapping slides barrels and mags have a .45.
I don't know about going down to 9MM or 40 but certainly there are cross-overs.

Biere,

I did notice that pin was missing on the 9mm frame. We took apart a G19 and G23 and compared them side by side. Tha pin seemed to be the only thing different.

By the way, I do remember someone telling me that the first G23's were identical to the G19's. The extra pin was added later.

Regardless, I'm sure this is not the first time someone put a G23 slide on G19 frame.

For what it's worth, the mutt seems to work just fine. It's accurate and so far 100% reliable. Don't think I'll be shooting anytime soon though.

Ahh, ok my mistake. Instead of slide, I should have said complete upper. Including barrel and all internals.

Glock put that 3rd pin in for a reason. The pin adds a second anchor point to the locking block. I guess what your friend does is his business. I however don't think I'd do it. I have heard, anecdotally, that some individuals add the third hole and use a G23 locking block. I don't know if that is true or not. I woudn't recommend it. -Coug
