Since the search function for FUBAR right now I'll just ask. Glock Model 21 or 1911 variant, thinking Para Odenance if 1911 style gets the nod.. Going to use it in IDPA matches at my local gun club. Most of my revolvers are getting on in the tooth and I want to try something different. New prices are pretty similar up here, the Glock I looked at today was about $300 less than a stock Colt 1911, and for a full up Colt factory model, beaver tail , bigger safety etc. was almost $500 more than the Glock. Really liked the Glock simplicity and the last Colt Combat Commander I had sucked. Opinions?

If you shoot IDPA...

...the Para scores you no points over a single-stack gun due to mag capacity limitations.

Depends. Which class do you want to shoot in? Which pistol do you shoot better?

If I was just going to buy a pistol and start shooting, the G21 is pretty much ready to go out of the box for SSP division, and can double nicely as an IPSC Production-class gun.

With a 1911, you might want to do a bit more tweaking out of the box, but the results can be quite rewarding.

Considering the price of a 1911 that actually shoots well out of the box, compared with the Glock 21, I'd go with the Glock.:D

Hmmm..

I think the price difference between a 1911 that works right out of the box is about $100 more than a G21, isnt it?

Not too much more in the big scheme of things.

Price should never be the foremost concern when purchasing something that will last a lifetime.

Hopefully this won't turn into another Supergun vs. Inferior Product debate, but the fact is if you want to shoot IDPA you might want to try them both out at a rental range. It doesn't matter if someone tells you the 1911 is the "greatest handgun in the world", if a Glock actually shoots better out of your hands.

There are owners of both the 1911 and Glock 21 who hate the other gun.

Find someone/two people who will let you put a box of 50 through each gun. The gun you can shoot the best is the one to buy.

Another thing to think about is your basic style.
In another sport (cycling), I came from a triathlon background. these are the guys who don't care so much about the 'grand tradition' of cycling, they just wanted the things on their bike that made them go fastest (titanium, aerodynamic parts, etc). These to me are the Glock kinds of people.
Then there are the traditionalists. They appreciate the heritage of the 1911 much like traditional road cyclists did with their cycling heritage.

Of course, the arguement breaks down eventually in some ways.

But I'm the kind of guy who likes the Glock sort of technology. I freely admit that I like that sort of stuff (polymer, striker firing pin, etc). But, I also admit that when I hold a 1911 in my hands, I understand the great things this pistol has done for our military in the past 80 years or so.

do what you want, but that'something that I don't hear discussed much in the great 'Glock vs 1911' debate.

cheers!

Price shouldn't be much of an issue, IMO. There are very good 1911 variants available that are right in line with the G21 (Springfield Armory comes to mind) in that department.

Personally, I don't own any 1911's. I do own and shoot IDPA with my G21, though. So, my answer to your question is:

Try 'em both and find out what works for you! :D

If you're looking at this from a competition standpoint ONLY, then the G21 will allow you to shoot in both SSP and CDP divisions in IDPA (you can only load 8 if you're shooting CDP) without any modifications. The 1911 will put you in CDP.

Both are fantastic designs, and you won't mess up going either direction. But you need to get both in your hands and put some lead downrange.

I'm in the same situation.. I want something for the IPDA and tried shooting both the Para-16 limted and Glock 23 today. I was able to get very tight groupings with the Para immediately but the Glock was all over the place. I really wanted to like the Glock since it was much cheaper than the Para, but even at twice the money, the Para is a better for me.

I'm going give the Glock one more try if I can find a Glock 35 for rent. I just wish I could shoot a Glock better. It must be me because I've seen others shoot the Glock extremely well.

Glock trigger...

...is kinda wierd if you're used to other ones. Also, when you see someone working a Glock well in rapid fire, nine times out of ten they've learned to "work the reset"; only letting the Glock's trigger out far enough to reset before pulling it again.

1911 triggers are much easier to shoot fast accurately due to negligable travel and light weight.

The Glock 35 might do better for you than the 23 did, since it has the lighter competition trigger and a longer sight radius; give it a whirl.

Tamara

Any word on whether or not Glock is going to offer a .45 ACP with a longer barrel/slide like the G34/35?

I'm pretty sure it would be a hit in the IDPA/IPSC crowd.

(I know that I would want one!)

(I know that I would want one!)

You and about eleventy-seventeen other people. ;)

'Course, they could only add about .5" to the gun's OAL if they still wanted it to fit inside The Box.

True. True.

I guess I was wondering if there was any way to sort of slim it down a little in the process, too. Something like a G36 with a long slide/barrel and a slightly wider grip to accomodate 10-round mags.

INTERESTING QUESTION

Buy the one you prefer, as neither are game-guns. Both CAN be used, but it is never the gun..........

I don't have good results with Glock, so I prefer 1911-pattern guns.
My advice would be to buy a full-sized metal Kimber in 45ACP.

It's not the gun that does the job, it's the shooter.

Only rank amateurs assign a higher priority to the gear than the skill behind it. 1911s work fine for some people, Glocks work equally fine for others. I like both, so I own 1911s and Glocks.

Let's not turn this into another "My gun can beat up your gun" thread...they're silly and unprofessional.

Get your hands on both and pick whatever you shoot better.

Rank amateurs...

revisited...only rank amateurs I know are DRAFT DODGERS AND THOSE WHO NEVER SERVED OUR COUNTRY ...THE REST ARE JUSThacks who by virtue of their title, station in life, or unearned privilege feel the need to chastise others for whatever opinion THEY find contrary to theirs...ring a bell??

Try both guns....you'll find all steel a better way to go!
