Glock genealogy

Could someone here inform the ignoramus (me) regarding the 'generations' of Glock?

What does it mean if a Glock is first/second gen., and how does one tell the difference?

Many appreciatories.

Basically a frame difference, 2nd gen has finger grooves and rails. This 'gen' terminology also applies to magazines. Go to GlockMeiser.com for some excellent graphics.

humpman -- Don't take this as a flame, but the 1 st generation wasn't exactly smooth. It had pebble grip texture all around the grip. Starting with the 2nd generations, Glock put checkering on the front and back straps. My 2nd generation G17, circa 1990, is still going strong after many, many rounds.

Hey, I was just quoting somebody else :)

Maybe it should have said "smoother." :)

Actually I went back and checked to see if I lost a column heading or something. I think the implication was that the smooth/textured grip really was referring to the front and backstraps. Is this more correct?

I have fired two different Glocks, but didn't even pay attention to the details. In retrospect, I think one was a 2gen G19 and the other a 1gen G17.
