Thought I would share in case anyone else reloads 6" barrel 10mm Glocks:

As to be expected the G40 Glock 10mm shoots higher than book velocities.

This load data was worked up and max loads should not be tried without careful progression.

Glock G40 10mm - New Winchester brass - Berry's 180gr. FP and Hornady JHP
COL=1.255 roll crimped. CCI 300 primer Alliant Blue Dot powder

9.4 gr. - 1180 fps avg - 15 rounds - 2.5" group at 10 yds.
9.5 gr. - 1185 fps avg - 55 rounds - 2.5" group my favorite target load
9.6 gr. - 1195 fps avg - 15 rounds - 2.75" group
9.8 gr. - 1247 fps avg - 15 rounds - 4" group
10.0 grJHP. - 1269 fps avg - 15 rounds - 4" group my new max range load
10.2 grJHP. - 1316 fps avg - 14 rounds - 4.5" group my new defense load
10.4 grJHP. - 1364 fps avg - 15 rounds - 5" group no pressure signs - max book load.

I'm not a fan of Blue Dot, but it is certainly a good choice to put under 180's in 10mm. The numbers you got is pretty much what I would expect.

I shoot my share of 10mm. I don't own a G40 (not legal in Ca); but I have a 20sf & 29sf. I use AA#5 for basic range ammo; and AA#7 for the hot stuff - all 180 grain ammo. I know a lot of folks suggest AA#9, but I think it's just a bit much for my shooting style and guns. Now if I had a longer barreled G40, I'd go for the AA#9. As an aside, I use Lone Wolf barrels for my Glocks.

I use plated for the range ammo, and jacketed for the hot stuff. That was my only eyebrow raiser with your info. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't drive plated bullets that hard. I believe the max fps recommendations on the box is nonesense and thus, move over to jacketed sooner than most.

Thanks for the post. I always like to see what other folks are doing with their load work ups (and usually publish mine).
 
Steve, did you notice any fragmentation with the Berry bullets once you got to the 1250fps+ level?

Oops.. I edited my post. The loads over 10 grains were Hornady JHP's. I say no fragments on the 9.8 grain loads that were plated. In the future that load will also be jacketed. Thanks for bringing that up!
 
Try 800x for jacketed "old-school" loads

Though 800x is very difficult with which to work, Mike McNette [before he started DoubleTap] posted several loads he had worked up using the G20 and G29 [some loads in a Contender]. I have reached 1400fps with Hornady XTP from my G20 using 800x. Blue Dot, he pushed to 11+ to get 1257fps from his G29. [using 180gr. XTP - all loads]

NO I AM NOT RECOMMENDING ANY PARTICULAR LOAD - SIMPLY RELAYING INFORMATION THAT WAS POSTED BY A REPUTABLE CARTRIDGE MANUFACTURER.

I almost bought the AA#9, but I also shoot a model 29 44Mag and use blue dot in that so wanted to consolidate for now. I do want to try it though. I almost bought a Lone Wolf also but my budget is tight. My understanding is that the G40 and newer model glocks have more support in their chambers than before. I ordered a bulge buster kit. :) This gun is my wilderness sidearm and loaded with 220 grain Buffalo Bore bullets so I want the most reliable barrel I can have for that purpose. I will get an aftermarket barrel for sure when I can swing it! Thanks!

As much as I enjoy power I was pretty conservative with working loads up in this one. The 6" barrel most certainly has more velocity. the 9.5 grain loads were really fun to shoot and grouped up nicely. I never saw any pressure signs in any loads.

Whew, that's hot stuff.

Through my G20, the hottest factory 180gn ammo I've recorded was HPR's 180 XTP (they use Hornady's bullets) at 1202 f/s.

The highest recorded velocity with my ammo was 1268 f/s using AA#7 (the G29 recorded 1222 f/s with the same ammo). These rounds had a jarring recoil. A stronger spring may have tamed them a bit, but we're talking plenty potent ammo no matter. I can't imagine any desire or need to make them any stronger.

I bought 10mm's over 40 S&W's for the headroom.

I've been a fan of the 10mm since Mr. Cooper pushed for its development. I would love to find a Bren 10 with magazines. The original load pushed a 170gr @ 1350, produced by Norma.

Mike M, single handedly brought the 10mm back from the dead...with the help of the polymer Glock, which was better suited for the round. At the time, the 1911 style pistols simply couldn't take the round..and the FBI agents couldn't fire it well.

Today, 10mm commercial rounds are much like 45 Colt rounds - Nowhere near where they once were. It was one of the first auto cartridges to be developed using near magnum pressures. Mike had indicated in his writing [at the time] the SAAMI Max was 37,500psi. I don't believe anything from Speer, Federal, etc. come anywhere near this.

Though I can get the power out of pistol, and have rounds loaded for self-defense, I don't abuse my firearms. I love the fact that the same pistol can shoot such a powder-puff load, achieving 1.5" groups at 25yrds.

When you're punching paper, 2 liter bottles and steel - there's no reason to push things.

I believe this is true - including my Glocks. I didn't get my LW barrels for the chamber support as much as to preserve the original barrels. At the range, they have the LW's in them. When they're loaded for home defense or carry (the G29), I have the stock barrels in them.

I bulge bust my 10mm brass - regardless of the barrel used. 10mm is high pressure and bulges the brass. I just like the idea of ironing out that bulge.

I completely agree. I (I mean Santa) bought this gun recently and need to see what it will do. I also have unique (which is fun to use for plinking in the 44 mag also) and plan to chrono that powder next.

That's about where I am too. 'bout 80% is with 180 plated, using 8.4 grains of AA#5 - running 1063 f/s; 1046 f/s through the 29. I'm guessing that roughly emulates a max load from a 40 cal.

Side note: I'm trying to find ways to exhaust my supply of Unique ('bout 1.5 #'s). Maybe 10mm/180 is a viable way. :)

True. Federal's 180gn Hydra-Shok runs only 983 f/s through my G29 (at $1.70 a round, I chose not to test them in my G20, since it's not a carry gun). The HPR's are much more potent (1188 through the 29) - but still not near max - I get that.

I don't carry my G29 often; but when I do, I have the Hydra-Shok's in it. Being north of 50 (:p) I choose to sacrifice some spunk for better recoil control. I trust they're still plenty effective.

My absolute favorite load for the 45 ACP [1995 Colt Gold Cup] is the same 5.6gr. of Unique under a 200SWC. To this day, the gun will hold 1.25" at 25yrds. In my younger [Southof50...much south], I could hold a 12" plate at 100yrds with regularity. Velocity is in the 800-850fps range. If you shoot a 45ACP, I couldn't recommend a load more highly.

Toughest part of getting older and shooting is that I need corrective lenses for reading/computer work. So, when shooting, it's either use the glasses and see the sights but then get dizzy when I pick my head up, or "rough out the sights" without glasses, and see everything clearly :-)
 
MMMM love me some 10mm.

Saving now to get me a G40. I've been having a ball with my IAI Javalina for about 25 plus years now. It'll smoke the 180gr Gold Dot out easily at 1350fps over AA9. Our feral hogs don't like it at all.:D
