Glock G19

Looking into getting one of these. They look as if they could be the perfect gun, for almost anything. I am buying for carry and car. What really sells me on this gun is the easy customizing ability of these guns. There are so many parts out there, and most are not expensive, with exception of hi-cap mags. Anybody have any stories/facts/info about this pistol?

Thanks,

JCrim007...

Welcome to The Firing Line. I've been thinking of a 9MM myself. I own a Glock 27, so if I bought a G26, I could use the same leather. However, for me, I guess that's not a good enough reason to get the 26. I've been looking at a G19 NIB, for $489.95 in Louisville. I was thinking about a Kahr, but the pictures of the rough finish and reports of "walking pins" have made me think twice.
My G27 hasn't stumbled once, so I think the 19 will be a good bet. I might be in the minority, but I LIKE the looks of Glocks.

What information do you need?

The Glock19 is a great pistol. Durable, high-capacity, needs little maintenance, easy to clean.

If this is a defensive piece, resist the urge to customize.. it's reliable from the factory.

I have a Glock 23, 32, 27, 19, a Makarov, a S&W 629; had a USP40; have shot friends' CZ-75's, CZ-85's, Kimber 1911's, etc. I keep coming back to the Glock 19. It's so easy to shoot, and to shoot well.

I think the G19 is the perfect sized pistol, for me anyway. Too big for carry for me though, I would have a hard time concealing it and if I could, I wouldn't want to carry it very long. But some carry full-sized 1911s concealed so whatever works for you.
Great for the range, car or home defense though. I can shoot it very accurately, love the trigger. I would highly recommend it.

CCW.

I'm a 5'9", about 160lbs guy. I can easily conceal my Glock19 under a sweatshirt. It's a little big to conceal under a tshirt only, but it can be done.

Glock 19's are excellent weapons. They really need very little "customizing". All I did with mine was replace the plastic sights with steel ones and add Wolff springs to the magazines.

I own a G19 and it's a great pistol. I have a Comp-Tac Shirt Tucker holster and it works great to hide my 19.

Glocks are easy to take down and clean, easy to operate, and durable. Not much in the way of looks, but I like 'em. :p

Here's a scan of mine:

I have 2 Glock 19s (NYPD issue). Both work flawlessly. Taken plenty of abuse and neglect and work great. Have
the Trijicon night sites on one and standard Glock sites on the other.

I got them specifically because they take the place of 2 guns, great 15 +1 on-duty gun and still concealable.

I'll bet the NYPD won't be replacing 25,000 guns. All the 9mms the NYPD has tried have had problems. Almost every Sig rusted and needed to go back to get "K" coated. The S&W had problems. The Ruger that the original tested was huge and looked like a freakin' ray gun...uggggly! The also tested the Beretta and for whatever reason never offered it.

Maybe the problem isn't with these guns but rather 40,000 guys who don't practice(mostly),don't clean(mostly)use the guns as bludgeons(occasionaly :) ), drop them, receive minimal training, etc. etc.

I am 5"6' 160lbs med build and can conceal the G19 pretyy good. IWB is almost perfect and on the belt is passable. Unless you're really, really concerned about bein totally discreet you should be OK. If you absolutely need to have your gun be 100% undetectable(work etc.) full capacity double stack guns might not be what you want.

Add me to the list of Glock-lovers. I do not claim that it is "perfection" but it IS a damn fine pistol with many fine qualities. I heard a phrase once which seems to fit the G19, "very size efficient". Not too big, not too small, plenty of rounds, easy to use.

HOWEVER...

I think that if you get a G19 to carry as a self-defense pistol, then you need to seriously work on mastering it. My analysis of the "problems" with accidental/negligent discharges with Glocks is that they seem to occur to people who are less than knowledgeable and proficient with their Glock. Now this could probably be said about A/NDs with ANY firearm, but I think the Glock demands a little more proficiency. That's my opinion on the subject, but i still recommend the Glock. I just recommend more practise with it.

I second FPrice, on both counts.

When I think about buying another pistol - CZ75, 1911, HK P7, Glock 23-- anything that might be used for self-defense, I ask: How does it compare to the Glock 19? 15+1 in such a carryable, shootable package is really hard to beat. A good carry load for such a pistol is the 124gr Speer Gold Dot +P, or the Proload 124+P.

An AD should not happen with a Glock. However, NDs are more likely with a Glock for those people who break safe gunhandling rules.

The G19 is my favorite semi auto. My present one has Heinie Black sights and Glockmeister competition trigger. Sure there must be something wrong with the G19 and NYPD. It took 42rds to kill a man at 7yds with multiple Glock 19s!

I wonder if the NYPD is using actual Glock manufactured magazines. This could be the problem with the dept-wide malfunctions. I'm not in law-enforcement and am not an expert, but I've heard about some other department out there that issued new SIGs with after-market mags...to save money.

G-19, good guns but-

I know of one female member at TFL that can shoot my
Sig P228, better than she can her own Glock 19. :D
