Okay, 1911 can be overhauled into anything you want...race, competion, combat, etc...but what is truly essential? I have a Glock 17, for nothing but a completely reliable ccw gun...do I need to do anything or is stock the way to go?

They have a trigger drop in kit.
I use it. Is it an improvement?
Each user has his own thinking.
It works for me.

The 1911 has gone from a gun to a religion and now has a whole cottage industry built around selling parts and gimmicks that mainly are not needed to folks who have more money than sense. The Glock has almost none of that, with only a few upgrades being available, since the Glock is seen as a "using" gun rather than a rich man's toy. I agree with Huntandfist and Neophyte1; unless there is something you definitely feel could be changed for the better, don't mess with success.

big glock fan here. for a carry gun i might suggest putting on a pair of night sight trij. or mepro. Perhaps do the .25 cents trigger job w/ mabey a new connector. but like most here, i really would not mess w/ it too much, just keep stuff updated (i.e. make sure your fallowers are working properly).
 
I have added Extended slide release to each of mine and 3.5lb connector. There is little you can do to imporove "Perfection"
 
Thanks guys, gonna go with the lighter trigger...ghost ring rear site (I know a lot of people dont like em but they work for me) and a custom paint job for fun...but other wise gonna leave it stock.
 
i'm not too big of a fan of glocks, but i did use a 17 (2nd gen) for a race gun.
had the top of slide milled off, and holes milled around firing pin (rear) to light weight the slide.
had a 2.5lb trigger, reduced the pull/return to about 3mm, and had the "safety" removed.
put a lighter return spring in.
put in custom sights (basically regular ones with crosshatch carved and filled in for easy alignment)
bevelled mag attchmt, custom.
handgrips.
you can do all that stuff with a 1911 as well. i just found it easier to work with plastic.
that thing was easy to shoot. got accused of having a g18.
