Glock "Commander" size pistols, slide swap?

Is it possible to swap Glock slides, as example, a G19 slide onto a G17 frame, and have a working, functional pistol as a result?

Would such a swap have to stay within the same "generations", ie, gen 3 onto gen 3?

A 19 slide on a 17 frame should fit just fine except the dust cover on the 17 frame is longer and may look goofy. I have a need to ask the question...."Why?"

I have always heard no you cant, I always thought it would be interesting to make a G26 frame with a G19 upper. I will be watching to see what the outcome is.

It's not possible to swap-on a G19 slide assembly (or vice versa) onto a G17 due to different locking block and barrel lug geometry.

bamaranger what is your end goal? Trying to get a Glock 19 length bbl/gun that holds 19 rounds - - shorter bbl but higher capacity?

It is a whole lot easier than swapping slides. Start out with a std Glock 17 mag, add a +2 mag extension, slide on a grip sleeve/spacer.

Real - short bbl - fun is running a 17 round mag in a Glock 26.

L-2 has it right. If you manage to get a G19 slide/barrel assembly onto a G17 frame, you'll probably find it much harder to get it back off.

They are not compatible.

As noted, the locking lug geometry is different between the G17 and G19. The barrel/slide from one is not compatible with the other.

The ones that will swap are the medium frame (G19/23) and small frame (G26/27). So you can put the G19 barrel in a G26 and have a functional gun. Or you can put a G19 top end on a G26 frame. You just have a gap in the dust cover. (Or in this instance a G23 top on a G27 frame).

It's actually really cost effective, and relatively simple, to just cut the grip down.. rather than trying to swap slides into a mismatched gun... just cut the grip.

David Bowie is probably the most well known for performing the mods well, as shown here:

Not planning on doing any converison. Exercise for conversation only.

A pal and I were discussing the Mech-Tech carbine conversions, and my mind went to swapping slides.....and I didn't know the answer.

I agree that's easier/less expensive. I rather like the short grip/long slide setup.

But the question was about a "Commander" style gun. Meaning a short slide on a full frame. Different animal.

I posted the long(er) slide on the little frame, as that was the only relevant picture I already had uploaded for reference. I believe it is possible to also put the little G26 slide on a G19 frame. But it looks equally goofy.

From what I understand, this is the beauty of the Sig P320 modular system. It allows the user to easily swap between grip frames, slide lengths, and calibers, all of which are compatible. For instance, you can have a full length slide on a compact or even subcompact grip frame if you feel so inclined.

But then you weren't asking about the P320, were you...;)

Correct. It's a great idea in theory, somewhat hampered in practicality by the fact that the conversion kits (slide/barrel) cost nearly what one would expect to pay for an entire P320. Which is what one should expect given that the only parts not contained in the kit are a $40-50 grip frame and the actual internal module which is also relatively inexpensive compared to the slide/barrel assembly.

No real reason to attempt this modification. Just buy the G19 with a shorter frame and slide. You can easily shoot full size 17 or even 33 round magazines in the gun. Add a +2 extension onto the 17 round mags for 19 rounds.
