Glock Backstrap--Why So Big?

Out of curiousity (not complaining here) does the Glock backstrap need to be so big? Or is it just empty space? I never took a Glock apart (don't have one).

Beretta has a HUGE backstrap, but was reworked to be a little more ergonomic (the Vertec), would such a redesign be possible with Glock?

I have a Glock 17. I complain about that unnessary back strap all the time. For me that's a deal breaker. The grip size is why I don't get proper trigger reach. grip reduction wont help with trigger reach. I called 1 co that does grip reductons thats what they say. The only way I'll get a grip reduction is if I can shoot a Glock 17 with a grip reduction & I shoot better. Why have the hollow back strap. Gaston has big hands & thinks everyone does? I think the reason is that's where the lanyard get attached. Also on the mag side there's a half circle for your thumb there's 1 on the front of the mag well. So you can get your finger in there to get the mag out. The original NFML (non drop free) mags need to be pulled out when the mag is loaded. When the mag catch is hit a fully loaded NFLM mag will drop 1/4 of an inch & you have to pull it out whith your fingers. This is so a soldier wont lose a mag on the battle feild after an accidental mag release.
