Glock 42 Range Report

My wife wanted to try out the Glock 42. I admit I have been interested in it as well since I do like the Walther PPK/S in 380 Auto and I wanted to see how it functioned. I had previously tried a SIG P238 and a Ruger LCP.

Here are the results of the first five rounds fired, free standing, at 7 yards.

I found the gun very accurate and precise. My wife shot it well and commented on how it doesn't really "kick".

However, my wife had several failures to feed. She was holding it very tight, but I noticed she didn't have her hand as high as it could be and when we got her hand up high the failures stopped.

I found it very similar. It shoots well and compared to how the other little .380s recoil, its a very soft shooter. I did have issues with putting a thumb on the slide stop, though that's a grip issue I have to work out. It's my favorite 380 I've shot/owned to date.

Good report, SG. I just got mine today, but I haven't fired it as of yet. I'm just waiting until it cools down outside before firing off a few rounds. Also, I see my test firing date of April 2 so it is strange my LGS just received this shipment.

I see other threads which show there are new magazines released which have a "01" designation added below the "33249", but mine doesn't have them. Also, I don't see any obvious dremel tooling around the top of the magazines. We will see how it works later.

Not to sugar coat but I got two 42's and with one brand of cheapy ball ammo that was very weak the gun failed to eject on two rounds. But after you shoot maybe 200 rds of ammo and it really settles in you shouldn't have a issue with anything. And at 7 yards on 1st post really doesn't show justice. Those guns do same or better at 20 yards. They are amazingly accurate.

BR, I fired about 50 rounds of a mix of brands, grains of ball and jhp later in the day. I was pleasantly surprised that it worked flawlessly. I will qualify with it Friday. For that, I purchased a box of 94 grain jhp PPU ammo. Hopefully, they will work as good as the other rounds. Sorry to hear of those who've had any problems. I just hope I won't be one of them on Friday and on.

SirGilligan,

I am intrigued by your range report. How did you create that?

I saw a footer tag indicating an IOS app, but what did you do? Pull a camera shot into an app that did all the annotation? Looks very nice and useful.

I had the chance to try one this weekend and it did pretty well. Accuracy was good, especially for the size and no reliability issues through about 100 rounds or so.

I fired my second trouble free 50 rounds today to qualify. Not one problem. Really happy with my 42. My range officer told me that another officer had a problem with his 42, but it worked flawlessly after instructing the officer to have a firmer grip.

I have read that Glock has made changes and some people have sent their “42” in for some upgrades.

Certainly the groups would get better. The first time ever shooting a pistol I wanted to show that even unfamiliar to its trigger pull a shooter can get the shots were they need to be.

SirGilligan,

The app generates a PDF report exactly as you see. You pull a photo from the camera or the saved photos in the camera roll into the app and it did all of the annotation as you say. The app allows me to email or print it, so I emailed it to myself, and on my computer I saved it is a JPEG and then used that.

I had the pleasure of shooting one a couple of weekends ago. I was wanting to give up on the .380 platform until I shot it. Very, very accurate.

Why did you want to give up on the 380 ACP?

I fired my second trouble free 50 rounds today to qualify. Not one problem. Really happy with my 42. My range officer told me that another officer had a problem with his 42, but it worked flawlessly after instructing the officer to have a firmer grip.

We noticed that we needed to get our grip as high as possible.

Glock 42

I've had my Glock 42 for almost two months.

So far I've function tested it with a variety of RN FMJ loads to include Federal white box, Fiocchi, American Eagle, Mag Tech, Armscor & CCI Blazer brass was well as commercial reloads from Wisconsin Cartridge.

I also function tested it with some Winchester Silvertips & Federal Hydroshocks that are nearly 25 years old, as well as Hornady Critical Defense which is what my PD mandates for off duty carry.

The only malfunctions I had were with new magazines that sometimes had a failure to feed all the way on the second round fired from the magazine. Once the mags broke in a little bit the problem went away.

I anticipate using the G42 as a backup at work & as a concealment gun in really hot weather. I bought a Galco ankle glove ankle holster and have used it quite a bit & found it to be quite comfortable. I've ordered a Mika holster to go on the straps of my body armor but it isn't here yet.

The G42 is very pleasant to shoot & has decent sights. I'm going to order night sights for it shortly. I have put Pearce grip extender floorplates on all my magazines. I have big hands & use the Pearce floorplates on all my little guns to give me a little more to grab onto.

My other .380s are a Sig 230 and a Walther PPK. My PD issued Sigs for many years & the P230 was my backup gun on duty.

The best 380, baby glock aka Glock 42

The baby glock AKA Glock 42 is the best 380 I have ever owned and I have owned most...

I did a review of it when I first bought it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JInPBr-rtY

It is a worthy gun from 7 to 100 yards a real shooter, and fits in your pocket as well ... what more can you ask of such a small pistol?

The P238 would be last in that list for me as well, and Ive owned/own all of them.

My P238 was a dog, and rarely made it through a mag with out a stoppage. Usually something like this was what you'd get.....

ry%3D400

It was pleasant to shoot when it worked, and was accurate. I also have a P230, and much preferred them to it, and up until the 42, it was the one to beat for any of them. The P230's are great guns.

Id put the 42 on the top of that list, now that I have them. My German Walther was a great gun, my US Walther had a lot of troubles. PPK's arent all that pleasant to shoot, and are blood thirsty critters. My hand was always tore up after shooting them. The LCP is "OK", but nothing special.

Id reorder the list like this....

Glock 42
Walther PPK/S (German)
LCP
SIG

Glock 42
LCP
Walther PPK/S (US)
SIG

I'm just curious sirgilligan, why did the Sig P238 come in last on your list?

My SIG P238 was one of the earliest ones. It was the stainless HD. During that time period Sig changed the type of recoil spring a few times and if I recall correctly three different generations of magazines. I think they have things worked out now, but I felt like a guinea pig just a bit. My son nick named mine the Jam-O-Matic. He was using it one day and it jammed every third round with FMJ/ball ammo. SIG customer service did everything they could to try and make it right, so don't think I hate the SIG employees, they are straight up hard working people. I could rant on what I think was a failure in design, and testing, but it is only speculation on my part. The hard fact was mine didn't run, suffered from what became known as the "soft slide", and it really disheartened me. During the same time I bought a SIG 556 rifle because the gas system intrigued me. It was a bit nose heavy and didn't shoot any better than my wife's Mini-14, but the bolt carrier group, the piston, the way it comes apart, it is great, like an improved AK-47. But it too suffered from some quality issues, so I don't know if it was bad luck for me or if SIG suffered some manufacturing pains, but I felt like I stepped in it. But that new SIG MPX looks like a good reason for me to forgive and forget!

p.s. The LCP "stings" my trigger finger something awful. I just hate to shoot it. I have very long skinny fingers, and it just doesn't work for me. My son-in-law has let me shoot his a bunch and I told him that if it were mine I would have to trade it. He shoots it well and likes it just fine.
