Glock 40 cal recoil rod/spring

I hear many new 40 cal Glock owners talking about replacing recoil rods and springs even before picking up the new Glock. I have been guilty myself but has anyone actually seen any frame battering damage caused by the stock assemblies? Any broken stock rods? How about damage with the new steel inserts in frames? I have now remained stock in my Glocks (my collection is growing again by the way) and the stock assemblies cycle smoother to me. My G27 only has about 1K rds so far but no problems. I would like owners reports and not quotes from self proclaimed pistol engineers from other forums please.Thanks.

Tom,

In order of date acquired I have:

G22 - 1990 - several thousand rounds, nearly all full power factory or reloads, thru it and have only used the stock recoil guide and replaced it once (Glock captive unit). It originally came w/the two piece unit. No signs of frame battering or excessive wear.

G27 - 1996 - 5M+ rounds, mostly factory w/some full power reloads. Replaced factory recoil assembly w/another factory assembly last year(Glock). No signs of battering or excessive wear. I have also shot this gun w/a G33 bbl. using full power loads and on Glocks recommendation, I used the "stock" recoil assembly (same for both guns).

G35 - 1998 - Over 10 thousand rounds of factory full power, reloaded full power and reduced power. I used this frame for my 24C upper also but with a reduced Wolff spring and guide rod for reduced loads in GSSF competition. Still using the original factory recoil assembly as a G35 and again, no excessive wear. I am considering replacing it soon however but only due to it's age not problems.

I also have a G32 that I use a G23 bbl. in (bought it from you I believe) with the stock captive recoil assembly. Not as many rounds as the other guns but it works just fine w/all types of ammo.

There were a number of G27s that had recoil rod failure after less than 100 rounds in some cases, mine broke at around 120. Glock was great about sending out new units to the dealers. I opted to buy the Wolff recoil rod and 20lb spring. The stock 16lb spring is a little light.

The stock spring in all full and Mid size Glocks is 17#, all the Mini's have 18# progresive Springs in them.

I am going to put a Stainless Guide rod in my G21C because I hear the Plastic ones snap in Cold Weather.... living in the North here most of the Winter is at least -20* c, last winter the coldest it got was -56* c.

20# Spring is going on that guide rod also.... give it a try anyway, ordering it from Glockmeister with the Glock stock spring Allready Imstalled. :)

I think that I can safely brag that I have the most expensive (and arguably best) recoil rod made. It's the LaserMax. Got one in my Glock 23, and the spring seems a lot tighter than either of the two (I had to replace the original when the spring wore down) factory springs I've had. The gun cycles better than ever now, and the LaserMax is surprisingly accurate.

I replace all plastic rods in GLocks because I live in an area that gets extreemly cold and Glock plastic rods have shattered in sub zero weather before. I put steel in all my glocks.
