Glock 36 Problem

I inherited a Glock 36 from my brother. It came with 1 mag. With the empty in place the slide will not lock back. I figured the mag was the issue, and bought a brand new Glock mag. Same problem. I removed the slide and inserted both mags, and each time the slide stop appears to slip off the follower toward the left. Because of this the mags do not free fall or eject when the release is pushed. Am I correct in assuming the slide stop needs to be replaced? It appears to have visible lateral movement, contributing to the problem.
If so, is this something I can do myself? I've never had a Glock, but I have built ARs and worked on all my other firearms including replacing springs, and other upgrades. Are any specialized tools required because it's a Glock?
Thanks.
