Glock 34/35 question.

Hey everyone, I'm looking into USPSA and possibly 3-gun. I need a good pistol and am leaning towards the G34/35. I will be renting both this weekend for testing purposes.

My question is this. Can I buy the G34 and get the .40cal barrel later or do I have to go with the G35 first and go down to the 9mm barrel?

The reason I ask is I already reload the 9mm and have lots of it and would use it for training/bowling pin shoots, but I'm planning on the .40 for USPSA for the power factor. I will reload the .40 (duh) but at the moment I dont.

Also, is there a minor/major power factor in 3-gun?

I have a G35. You can get a 9mm barrel for a G35, but I'm not sure about a .40 S&W barrel for a G34. I don't think you can do it the other way around.

3 gun has a minimum power factor of 125. There is no advantage to shooting major, all hits are scored the same.
 
You can get a conversion barrel to shoot 9mm and .357 sig from the G35 but with the G34 your limited to 9mm. The hole on the end of the slide on the 9mm Glocks is too small for a conversion barrel in a larger caliber.
 
Converting .40 cal Glock 35 to 9mm

I just got a Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel for my new Glock 35 in .40 cal.

I did it because 9mm ammo is cheaper than .40 cal ammo. I have no plans to use the 9mm barrel for defensive use.

I also bought a couple of G17 magazines to use with the 9mm barrel.

So far, I've shot 50 rounds of M882 GI ball and 150 rnds of Winchester generic (white box) without any malfunctions.

I did not have to change the ejector or extractor.

Storm Lake and KKM precision also make conversion barrels. I don't personally know anybody who has used a Storm Lake barrel.

I know one guy who bought a KKM conversion barrel for a project, and his project gun never ran right, but it was a weird combination of a Glock 24 upper, an alloy frame, a KKM 9mm barrel and I don't know what all. Anyway, his project gun never did work properly for any period of time.

The G35 slide will take a 9mm barrel but a 34 slide will not take a .40 barrel. Be aware that unless you plan to use 9mm magazines, ejector, extractor and RSA change with your conversion it should not be considered reliable enough for anything but practice.

Really?! I wouldn't have thought that 9mm ammo would work in a .40 S&W magazine.

I had to try it while posting this and just did. The 9mm ammo looks like it's really wanting to just slip through those feed lips. I'm not sure I'd use the .40 S&W mags with 9mm ammo for anything more than practice, like the other poster advised. I'll have to try this at the range to see how it feeds.
 
Yes, I only use it for plinking and haven't had an issue but in the defense of others I've only put about 6-800 rounds through it with the 9mm barrel even though I've had it for 3 or 4 years. Also My G35 is strictly a range gun. My carry gun is a G27.

Have G35 and 2 lone wolf barrels. One in 40 s&w and 9mm conversion
Using 40 magazines with 9mm is not a problem.
40 barrel is to replace stock one when shooting lead.
 
While the G34 and 35 are both excellent handguns and potentially worth buying on their own merit alone, I might suggest that you try a match or two FIRST before making any significant investments. I know how tempting it is to buy a kickass handgun especially when you feel you have a good reason to do so but you may find a given competition, regardless of which one, may not be exactly what you thought it would be. Of course, if you can afford to buy one regardless, then I suggest the G35. Still, I suggest you try one or two matches first. This is all just my 2 cents anyway.
 
I'm going to have to conduct an experiment with my G35 with the LW 9mm conversion barrel and see if it'll work shooting 9mm and using the .40 cal magazines . . .
