Glock 20 10mm questions.

I am not at all familar with the 10mm round. What are the pros and cons of this round? Price per box?

I am playing with the idea of getting a Glock 20c so that I can try out a 10mm pistol. Would it be a worthwhile round to try out or should I just stick with my original idea of getting a G17c?

The gun will be primarily a range gun.

I don't have one, but I have seriously researched and considered getting one on several occassions (though right now I'm looking for a P7M13 or a Colt Gold Cup). It seems that whenever there is a thread about only having one handgun (regardless of concealability), the Glock 20 always makes a strong showing.

While it's bigger than most (including the grip), it holds a lot (15+1) rounds of a very powerful bullet (some say too strong). The Glock, in general, is a very solid platform. Opinions vary on the trigger do vary, though.

Everyone should own a Glock. Everyone should also own a 10mm (including me!). If you've already got a nine or two and the large grip of the Glock 20 doesn't scare you, I say go for it!

I don't know all the pros and cons of the G20, but for a range gun, I'd pick the G17C. Around here(Central FL) 10mm is about $11.00 for a box of 20 or ~$15 for 50 (practice rounds). 9mm is considerably less ($7 for 50).

Now, to contradict my post:
If you are really interested in the 10mm round or the Glock 20, go for it. By getting something else now, you're just putting off the inevitable. You will buy a G20 someday, if you really want one. It might as well be now.

Pros, you can shoot factory loads available in 40S&W to 41MAG loads. 15 round mags, one up the pipe. One of the flatest shooters out there, very accurate.

Cons, full capacity mags are expensive. Ammo may or may not be hard to find locally, if you live in the sticks.

I buy from Georgia Arms, $13.75 box of 50 for Gold Dot HP ammo and $9.50 for FMJ range stuff.

Let me get this straight. Dont laugh, i own a G20, you are saying i can shoot 40 and 41 mag rounds out of my 10mm, safely? If i took this wrong, i apologize.

No, he meant 10mm rounds in those respective cartridge's power ranges.
B.B. Those are some good prices on 10mm. I assume thats mail order? Or can my local shop carry Georgia Arms ammo? I've heard it mentioned on here before but never paid much attention to it. Whats the scoop on this company? I know about the Gold Dot, does this company get some kind of permission from Speer to use it to make up a load?

Ga Arms is mail order, unless you live in the Atlanta area, and they also sell alot at gunshows. Of course your local shop can buy it in bulk (it gets cheaper the more you buy) and resell it, but I'm sure they'll add at least 10% to their cost. They make very good ammo, clean and accurate, very good quality control. They call their carry ammo "shear power plus" and have matching FMJ and LRN ammo in the same weight for the range. Heres the website:

http://www.georgia-arms.com/index.htm

Lots of companies use Speer Gold Dots- CCI/Blazer, Georgia Arms, Proload are a few.

Wildcard, the 10mm cartridge can be loaded to match 40S&W to 41Magnum ballistics.

Would it be posssbile to purchase a G17 barrel and mags, and use it inside a G20 when I want to save some money at the range?

Nope. You can get a 357SIG and .40S&W aftermarket barrel for it. But why? $9.50 for a box of 50 FMJ is a darn good price for ammo, regardless. You can get a 45ACP Glock 21 slide assembly/mag for it. Heres the barrel compatibility list:

Cool, any idea how much a .40s&w barrel would cost for a G20c? Would it be worth getting the G20c and then buying a .40 barrel or is that wasting too much money, meaning I should just stick with my original plans of getting a G17c. I just thought a G20c might be something different as compared to what all the local Glock shooters have around here....

You prefaced this question with the information that you only intended to use the pistol as a range gun. If all you want to do is punch holes in paper (as I do a bunch), the why would you even consider the G20? You're much better off with the G17. I don't know why you'd want the ported model, as the muzzle flip is minimal with a 9mm,anyhow. If you want a larger bore, you'd find the G21 to have a much less snappy recoil and with better accuracy than the G20. Also, the G21 will shoot .400 Cor-Bon, .40 Super, .45 Super, .450SMC, .460 Rowland.

WalterGAII,

I don't think that touting the ability of a gun to shoot .460 Rowland (with a barrel change) is going to score a lot of points when someone's already worried about the cost of normal 10mm ammo.

Really, what did 10mm do to you? Stop returning your phone calls? Or do you get a commission on every G21 conversion barrel you sell? ;)

You'll have to do the research yourself.

BUT, the G20 is one of the most versatile Glocks around. BUT you have to have medium + sized hands to handle the grip and the gun's recoil.

It can shoot bullets from 135 grains to 220 grains. So basically you can shoot 9mm, 40SW, and 45 ACP weight bullets in a 10mm case.

If you reload, you can load them FBI Lite (40SW recoil) or all of the way to flame-throwing nuclear rounds going almost 1600 fps with a good 600 fpe. The kind of round that makes people come over to lane to see what you are shooting.
No other Glock can reliably offer 41/44 Mag ballistics out the box.

Forget 40Super and 45Super. You will (a) hardly ever find cases to reload at the range; and (b) when you do by mail order, they'll be so expensive, you'll scream; and (c) they have higher kaboom risks than 40 SW.

For $90 you can order a Federal fully supported aftermarket 40SW barrel for your G20. But why?

If you reload, a case of 1,000 completed 10mm cartidges will only cost you $5-5.50 a box of 50. And at $15-20 a box for factory 10mm ammo, you need to reload. So add $600 on for a Dillon reloading setup.

As to the accuracy, it is just as or equal to the G21 in the accuracy department. Accuracy is a large function of shooter skills. And yeah a good gun helps. But I have seen guys who can barely hit the paper with an HKP7.

The G20 is a great gun for a shooter who RELOADS and wants to plink, shoot plates/pins, or go HUNTING for whitetail or feral pig. That's why I got one!

So let me get this right. A G20 will indeed accept a G17 9mm barrel without any modifications. I'd like to be able to have a 9mm barrel for the range, and use the 10mm for self defense.
Anyone have any ideas how much a G17 barrel would cost?
Oh, I have held and shot full size Glocks and they fit my hands fine.
Thanks

Lightsped, reread my post. A G20 will NOT except a G17 barrel or magazine. And I'm still confused as to why you want to shoot 9mm at the range?

I own a 29, which I dearly love. A 20 will probably be my next Glock. I might even get a fitted 6" Bar-Sto for it since my dream of getting a 610 will probably never happen after the recent Boston deal (just after I bought a used N-frame and started falling in love...).

A G20 at the range is a little pointless, and I think all porting is pointless, unless you shoot "real-man" wildcats as noted above. A 20 is the most firepower one can carry concealed, meaning cartridge power times no. of rounds in a handy sidearm. There is nothing else out there, period, that has that powerful a round with a 16-round capacity.

For the record, unless you are suicidal or have an extra hand lying around, you cannot load 10mm to 41 levels. You can come close depending on your level of stupidity and risk acceptance, but it can't be done and shouldn't be attempted.

Get a G17 for the range, some decent sights and two cases of FMJs. If you really want the power, then the 10mm is the way to go and it IS worth it to start reloading for it; even if you don't load now, you'll still save alot in the long run.

FWIW, I do get a commission on G21 conversions, and I have no intention of ever trying 460 Rowland. I was just pointing out the flexibility of the G21 platform. I do enjoy shooting .400 Cor-Bon and .40 Super. (I've also bought some .45 Super brss to convert to .400 Cor-Bon, and found it not to be much more expensive than standard .45 ACP brass)

Also, FWIW, I don't depend on my conversion commissions for a living; I'm still getting large royalties from the Pfizer company. For three years, I gave 1/2cc of my blood monthly, so that enough chemicals could be extracted to produce Viagra for the rest of you guys.

Lets see, from the Winchester Ammo website:

41 Remington Magnum
175 gr. Super-X® Silvertip® Hollow Point

Distance (yds) Muzzle 50 100
Velocity (fps) 1250 1120 1029
Distance (yds) Muzzle 50 100
Energy (ft. lbs.) 607 488 412

10mm Automatic
175 gr. Super-X® Silvertip® Hollow Point

Distance (yds) Muzzle 50 100
Velocity (fps) 1290 1141 1037
Distance (yds) Muzzle 50 100
Energy (ft. lbs.) 649 506 418

Gosh, someone ought to inform Winchester of their stupidity level, eh?;)

My two cents worth. I have a lot of knowledge of Glocks and in my opinion, the G20 is the best pistol that Glock makes. It holds 15+1 rounds and shoots very, very well. That would be my self defense gun if my wife could use it too, but she can't so it's the 9mm for home. They are a bit expensive to shoot, but if you already haven't bought a Glock, I am sorry to say, you will be buying several more in the near future, so the cost of ammo isn't all that important. I am sure that sevearal of the people hear know exactly what I mean. Buy one and then you want them all.
