Glock 19, Walther P99, or S.A. XD-9???

Looks like it's down to these three in 9mm., as I haven't found a suitable .45 yet. Any suggestions?

I like the 4" barrels these all come with and their features...all very similar looking, and prices very close. Are their any advantages to the P99 over the other two? I know it comes with 3 backstraps...what's that? What kind of finish is on the P99's? I know theirs a QPQ version of the P99, is this the only Tenifered finish and is it satin? I assume all come with (2) 10 rd. mags.?

Alright, I like the Glock, but the polygonal barrel and non-fully supported barrel scares me away because I want to use reloads. I'd also feel safer with more safety than the Glock.

I like the XD's, but of the three, it's probably of the least quality and finish durability.

The Walther just looks AWESOME!!! ...and I can't find anything wrong with it, other than I want a VERY durable finish like Tenifer. I've only read one bad post about them. Does the hammerless design have an advantage / disadvantage?

The .40 is out with the Glock because of reloading, but should I consider it with the other models? How about a good .45ACP? Thanks!!!

I've never shot the SA, but I do have a P99 and a Glock 23 (and have shot the 19). The quality on the SA looks a little sketchy to me, so I'd go with the Glock or the Walther. The Glock has been around longer, and has more options available for it (hi-cap mags and holsters are more plentiful, and you can get the LaserMax). You can still find hi-caps and holsters for the Walther, but they are harder to find, and I don't believe the LaserMax is available for it. While both are excellent guns, I would go with the Walther. It's got a more comfortable grip and holds one more round in hi-cap form. The only drawback to the Walther is that if you hold the gun wrong, the tip of your trigger finger will chafe against the opposite sides mag release.

I like the G19 because it feels perfect in my hands and I shoot it well. The Walther seems top heavy to me and a bit goofy. I liked the XD9 but I hate grip safeties, and so why? Glocks have a lot going for them as stated. Go with the Glock.

Any of the pistols you mentioned would be a good choice. Personally, I prefer the Walther. For me it's more accurate, and feels better to shoot. Hi-caps are still available, but a bit more expensive. Also, I believe you can still order the P99 with 16 round mags from Earl's Repair. He's a bit higher, but his service is impecible. The backstraps, can be changed out to suit your hand size. I use the smaller strap because I have smaller hands.

Try them all and go with the one that fits you.

G19.. I have no REAL experience with the others you mentioned but have handled and shot all but the XD. I'll stick with my G19 rather than replace it.

All P99's (except the .40 caliber ones that were bastardised by S&W) have the Tenifer finish. The QPQ means Quench Polish Quench. Basically they take the carbon steel, Quench it in Tenifer, Polish it, then Quench it again. If I understand Tenifer Correctly, it is a clear substance, but you can add blueing to it to get the darkened look, like the Glocks and P99's have.

I personally have 6 P99's. They are all .40's and all work extremely well. You won't be disappointed with the P99. You won't be dissapointed with a Glock either.

I dont' like the trigger on the Glock, but other than that its a good gun. The P99 comes with the three backstaps to adjust to your handsize. It also comes with 4 front sight blades of various heights so you can zero your preferred ammo. The back sight is windage adjustable.

Hope this helps.

P99 -

I hope nobody minds, but I'd like to jump in here with a question since you have 6 P99s (I only have 1). Do any of yours have the QPQ slides? If so, do you find that the QPQ finish picks up blemishes/mars much more easily than the standard blue/tenifer finish? Thanks.

Either the Glock or the Walther would be fine choices. The Walther and Glock have unusual triggers so you should go to a range and fire both. As for the Springfield, if the pride of the Croatian firearms industry is as good as their cars (Yugos) then you might want to pass on it.

I am new to this forum. This is my first reply. But if you want to know more about the XD go to www.xdtalk.com It helped me make my decision. I bought a XD in 40S&W its a great gun and it feels better than any Glock that I have shot.

Catbird,

Yes, one of them is a QPQ and yes I have noticed that it picked up a couple of blemishes. One is a small black streak that almost looks like it came from my holster (the holster is black). I'm not sure why it did that. It also has a small spot of discoloration. You can't notice it unless the light is on it just right however. I almost think its from over heating. I ran a lot of rounds through that gun one day and noticed that blemish after cleaning it.

It's still a nice looking gun though.

I realize that some people are turned off by any silver over black guns, but I like them very much (I have a HK USP .45 w/ a stainless slide that is gorgeous, IMO). If the titanium-coated slide proves to be as durable as I hope, that, in .40 Auto, will be my 2nd P99.

BTW, I went to a local gun show yesterday and the prices are now down to $469.

Why can't Walther leave well enough alone? Titanium coated? #$@%@%^! Now here I go again, looking in sofa cushions, cashing in aluminum cans, checking coin returns, cutting back on the grandkid's birthdays, and standing on corners with those stupid signs. Just to get another pistol. It's a good thing pistols are cheaper than therapy. Otherwise I'd have to go get cured of this obsession.:D :D
