First let me say that these are both fine handguns. That said, I traded my P99 for a G19. Try as I might, even with the smallest insert, the P99 just did not fit my hand right. The G19 fits like a glove. But that is just a matter of personal ergonomics. The real issue is that yes, the P99 is ammo sensitive. It does not like Gold Dots at all!!! This is based upon having a live ( the first one out of the mag) jam the gun in such a way that I could not eject the round by opening the slide. It would not budge!!! Fortunately, we were at the range, and not out in the desert. The gunsmith cleared the jam. He left me with this sound advice: "Don't use Gold Dots !!!!"
