Hi, all,

Sorry if this is an old topic, but I can't tell with the search engine down. Does anyone here have any opinions[1] about the relative merits of these weapons for practice and/or self-defense? Especially accuracy and ergonomics.

Thanks,

Does anyone here have any opinions...
Ha! :D

Go with whatever you're comfy with and you'll content longer...if you're like me, you'll end up w/ both!

Both fine guns.

Easier availability of 15-round mags and holsters is the tiebreaker in favor of the G19, IMHO.

Whichever one fits your hand better would be a good choice.

I was looking at both when I was buying. The H&K had a softer recoil and just seemed to shoot where I pointed it. I liked the way the Glock 30 shot better than the 19.

Well, you know what I'm going to recommend.

Obviously, you should go with whichever one you shoot better, feels better, and operates most comfortably for you. If you're inclined to a Glock... that 'other' German pistol is a much better choice, IMO.

(I won't say the 'W' word here, in deference to the Glockers) :D

I never could get used to the trigger on the Glock. And remember, if it's for home defense, the extra margin for safety offered by the decocker and Double Action means a bit more peace of mind at home.

G19 for me, though both are excellent pistols.

If you haven't tried one or both, I strongly recommend that you do prior to buying. They're very different in the hand, and the decision will basically be made for you.

I won't say it either. They can see my screen name and read it for themselves.:p

My preference is the HK. It always felt better to me. Original G17 fit my hand pretty good but the compacts and the new finger grooved one were never quite right.

WP99M, my post was more or less tongue-in-cheek inside joke. PDModerator and I spent a few hours at my range, and he shot the P99 as well as a Glock, Beretta, H&K, SIG, and a handful of others.

PDM, as I recall, you preferred metal framed guns, probably because of lower felt recoil. But now that we're talking tupperware, I'd urge a second look at the P99. You're welcome by anytime, so we can share.

That's the way I meant it too. I hope I didn't offend any of the Glockers. Glock makes a fine pistol and I may even own one someday. I was poking fun at your "W" word comment. You and I have traded posts all over the place about our love for the P99s so I knew what you meant.

My friends tell me I have a bad habit of breaking down the door before I check to see if it's unlocked. :o

I do agree with what you said about trying them first. One mans meat, etc.

Hey, Rovert,

Actually I haven't shot EITHER a G19 or the HK USP compact 9mm. I've shot G17 and G21 (with a bad grip reduction) plus HK 45 variant 1 in both Shore Shot and Hillsborough. I've got an HK 45 variant 7 on order.

Shore Shot rents the G19. I guess I should go there and shoot it, shouldn't I? No idea where I could try out the HK 9MM though.

Re the "W word" yes it's a nice gun and I like the ergonomics but if it's for self-defense I don't want to monkey with manual safeties. I'm also thinking about "diversifying" a little. Better to own at least one weapon with widely available parts and service.

Well, my purchase permits are good until Feb. 20 so I've got some time, though I do want to use both by Jan. 6 (at which time Jim McGreasy :barf: gets inaugurated.) The night he won the election I went online and took out a 5-year NRA membership.

P. S. Hillsborough had a good deal on a used HK .40 variant 7 (DAO for right-handers) with night sights but I want a 9mm for the sake of inexpensive practice ammo. Plus there's the perpetual .45-versus-9mm argument, and I can win by playing both ends :D

Purchase permits ?

I prefer the way the 3rd gen. Glock 19 feels in my hands. Perfect fit and not as slide heavy as the HK.

I think...

that both are KA weapons (Kick @ss). My personal preference is for the HK as it is a much better fit for my hand and a much better natural point.
