Glock 19 mag problem

I've got a Glock feeding problem that I thought someone here might be able to help me with. By way of background, I have a Glock 17 that I've had about 2 years, and a new Glock 19 that I've only had a few weeks. Here is the different ammo I have tried in both of these pistols:

Factory Federal Hydra Shok JHP
Factory Speer Gold Dot JHP
Factory FMJ-RN (several makes)
Handloaded FMJ-RN
Handloaded lead TC
Handloaded Remington Golden Sabre JHP

The Glock 17 was a used, refurbished by GLock 2nd generation pistol when I bought it. It came with two 17-round pre-ban factory mags. I have since purchased several factory 10-round mags and several ProMag pre-ban 17 round mags. I have also had the gun upgraded to a 3rd generation frame by Glock in Smyrna. This gun feeds every type of bullet reliably, regardless of what type of magazine I use in it.

The Glock 19 was recently purchased new. It came with two factory 10-round mags. I have since purchased three factory pre-ban 15-round mags, and several ProMag pre-ban 15-round mags for it. Using either factory pre-ban 15-rd mags, or the ProMag pre-ban 15-rd mags, all of the ammo feeds reliably, every time. However, when I try the factory 10-rd mags, they won't feed anything except the factory or handloaded FMJ-RN ammo. They won't feed any JHP or TC ammo, either factory or handloaded. With the JHP handloads, I have tried various seating depths, with COL ranging from 1.050" to 1.120" (the JHP-RN ammo is naturally a little longer due to the pointy nose).

All of this stuff, regardless of factory or handload, regardless of COL, and regardless of bullet types, feeds OK in all type of mags in GLock 17. And it all feeds OK in factory or Pro-Mag 15-round mags for the Glock 19. But none of the JHP or TC ammo will feed in the factory 10-round mags in the Glock 19.

Now, this isn't a super big deal. I (and soon my wife) use the Glock 17 for competition (hence the 10-round mags). The Glock 19 is used for CCW, and I naturally don't use the 10-round mags for that. But I'd like to know why the 10-rd mags won't feed anything but RN in the Glock 19.

When I say they won't feed, here's how I have been testing them: Gun is at slide lock, no mag installed. I load one round into a mag, and insert it into the gun. I then let the slide go forward by either pushing down on the slide lock lever, or by pulling back on the slide and letting go (I've tried both methods). In those situations above when this works, it works every time. In the above situations when it doesn't work, it doesn't work about 80-90 percent of the time. When it doesn't work, the nose of the bullet jams against the bottom of the feed ramp of the barrel. The round has been moved forward in the mag a little, but is still under the feed lips. To remove the mag, I must first lock the slide back, and then push the mag release and actually pull the mag out of the pistol. WHen I do this, the round is popped out of the mag and falls down out of the pistol frame.

A couple of weeks ago, I called GLock tech support in Smyrna. They felt that it wasn't the pistol, since it worked find with 15-round mags. They sent me a new factory 10-rd mag, and asked that I send one of the original ones back to them so they could check it out. I did that (I got the new one in 2 or 3 days. The new 10-rd mag does the same thing -- works with FMJ-RN ammo, but nothing else.

BTW, all of the above ammo feeds and shots OK in a Ruger P95 using factory 10-rd mags, factory pre-ban 15-rd mags, and aftermarket pre-ban 15-rd mags.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I had similar problems as well with my 2nd generation G19 while using new 10 rounders (I no longer have this gun). How I fixed it was I put in 15 round followers in the 10 round mags, It isn't illegal and doesn't in anyway increase the capacity, I also added Wolff mag springs but they make it damn hard to get the 10th round in. The trick is to leave the 10 rounders loaded for a month or so after swapping springs. I ordered my followers through www.glockmeister.com ask for the ones stamped 9mm3, the 9mm1's will work great but the newer 9mm3 followers are the upgraded ones, they cant the bullet at a steeper angle. I think Glock Inc came out with these after NYPD had reliabilty problems but I could be wrong.

If have two older 9mm1 followers you can have free of charge if you want them, just email me your address. In the meantime to see if this is the problem just disassemble your high caps and put their followers in your 10 round mags and see what happens.

I thinik you're on the right track with the follower idea. I had a little bit of a problem with one of my factory hi-caps, and Glock sent me a new psring and follower for it and it fixed the problem. The old follower was a 9mm1 and the new one was a 9mm3.

Do you remember about how much the new 9mm3 followers were from Glockmeister?

Also, was there any trick getting the new 9mm3 followers to fit in the factory 10-round mags?

BTW, if they don't increase the capacity at all, I don't see why it should be illegal to swap them in.

Also, I've never had a 10-rd mag apart. What's different about it, compared to the 10-mags. I mean, they obviously don't limit capacity the same way that Ruger does it by shortening the effective length of the mag. Do they so it by just making the inside of the mag narrower?

Thanks for your response.

It IS NOT illegal to swap them. The followers fit without any 'fitting'. I honestly don't know why Glock doesn't use them from the get go. Glockmeister charges $2 a follower I think .http://www.glockmeister.com/partref1.html

How they make the mag a 10 rounder is the metal lining inside, the 10 rounder funnels the rounds more like a non staggered mag which limits its capacity. Because of this it also uses a different spring then a 15 rounder.

Replace your 2183 followers with 9mm1 or 9mm3 to solve your problem. Glock replaced mine free several years ago.

Tom,

Replacing the follower seems to be the conensus for a fix. I'm glad to hear that Glock replaced them for free for you. I'll give them a call on Wednesday when they're back at work. Thanks for the reply.
