glock 17

There are special firing pin seals that allow you to fire the G17 under water, I recall someone here at one time talking about trying it. Of course, the bullets don't go more than 10-12 feet under water, but they'll fire... If you must try it, make sure the barrel is full of water before you fire, or you'll be in for a nasty surprise! :)

Any gun should be able to fire under water. As was said, make sure that the barrel is full of water to equalize pressure.

Make sure your ears are above water. Water is denser than air, and you will probably not enjoy the experience.

Here's a question? Why do so many people feel that being able to fire underwater is a big deal? I'm not criticizing anyone. I just really want to know why people feel that its so important.

"Why do so many people feel that being able to fire underwater is a big deal?"

Two words:

Marketing hype.

I'm not sure it is marketing hype. I can't remember ever hearing of a manufacturer that touted this capability. I have this feeling that it comes from the Hollywood idea that SEALs regularly engage in CQB underwater. Is it possible that Osama is really hiding out somewhere underwater? Before I pass judgement on any "pool ninjas", I want to make sure there aren't any scuba divers who have fended off sharks or something to that effect.

Note: I am not referring to anyone on this thread...yet.

Organ damage...

Yeah.. There's something about the prospect of permanent and severe ear and organ damage that makes firing a gun underwater not so fun anymore. I'd do it only to save my life.

It is not important at all (for me), and I can't see any situation where it would be useful (exept shark attac) but who will bring a handgun while scuba-diving? but it would be fun to try:D

Why do so many people feel that being able to fire underwater is a big deal?

Our GSG9 has an amphibious unit. It is important for them to have guns that can fire from under water or completely wet.

And then there are guys who think it's cool to have the same gun as some special unit. Or is there any other reason to buy a HK Mk23? ;)

It is important for them to have guns that can fire from under water or completely wet.

That still does not answer my question. Let me repeat.

Why do so many people feel that being able to fire underwater is a big deal?

I am intimately familiar with amphibious ops, by the way. Completely wet is perfectly understandable. Most weapons will do that anyway. Underwater is a different thing. I understand that some feel it is important, I'm asking...WHY???

At least one specialized Scuba diving group regularly uses their Glock Model 17's to dispatch sharks where they dive.

Besides scuba divers and the military, I can't imagine anyone else who feels it's important. I think what you are seeing is the "neat-O" factor at work here, not significant importance. The average Joe hears that the Glock can shoot underwater and thinks "Hey, that's kinda neat.". That's all.

Kinda like that comercial where the guy goes and gets his wife so he can show her how all the windows roll down on the car at once when you turn the key a certain way. It's a neat-O feature that will probably never be used. But we still think it's cool because hey, we're guys.
