Glock 17 slide malfunction

I'm not sure if this would be constituted as a malfunction but here we go. I got my parts in from midwayusa today and installed everything but the sights. That being, extended slide release, extended mag release and a stainless steel recoil rod and spring. After words I did some dry fires to test everything I could and went out shooting.

The second magazine didn't have a problem and fed normally. The first one though caused the slide to lock open with four more rounds in the clip. I wished I would have marked the clip to see if it was one of my new ones that I received today.

Does this sound like a weak spot in the clip? I would figure if it was the gun it would have done it more frequent and on the other clip as well.

Could be something with your extended slide release causing you to inadvertently press against it and lock the slide back. It's happened to folks before. Which slide release did you get?

I bought the lone wolf. And you are probably absolutely right. I didn't think of that. I shot 2 magazines and my wife shot one. I happened to rest my dominant thumb right on it. I imagine during recoil it just slipped underneath it and pushed it up.

I made an edit above because I meant slide stop not magazine release. I'm getting old. :o

Sometimes it's the dominant thumb, sometimes it's the supporting hand thumb. Depends on your grip. One way to confirm is next time you go shooting duse the same mags but shoot one handed and tuck that dominant thumb down below the slide release. It should let you know if what you're doing is accidental. If it still happens then there is likely another issue.

I had similar issues with Glock extended slide releases. I went back to stock. Your other option is to learn to adjust your grip accordingly.

Yeah if the slide was locked back (and not a failure to eject), you probably bumped the slide release up while shooting. I've done the opposite and held it down a few times, causing the slide to not lock back on an empty magazine.

Hello to the OP. I hope you have it figured out. Also, please note that the Glock utilizes magazines....not clips. Everyone knows what you meant but you may get called ugly names on other forums if you keep saying clip. ;)

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you. You'll enjoy that 17.

It's also possible that the magazine followers aren't exactly compatible with the slide stop.
One or the other might need a little tweaking.

Check the location on your slide stop lever and make sure its correct. I had the same issue with my 34. If you compare the spring pressure against another Glock that is working properly you will find that there is much less pressure holding it down. What happens is when the gun is fired the recoil causes the slide stop to bounce up and if the timing is right will lock the slide back.
If its in the wrong position be very carful taking it out, it will hang up and bend the spring making it unusable.

You are probably bumping the slide stop up----but there is one thing to
check.

Make sure the tail of the slide stop spring is UNDER the upper (small)
locking block pin.

When I installed the slide stop I made sure that the spring went under the top smaller pin. I have read about that being a problem. I have to change my hand position a bit on the grip so next shooting session I am going to see if the problem comes back
