glenfield scopes

Hello all, I've owned my Glenfield 30-30 for about a year, been a joy to shoot but haven't had the opportunity to hunt with it yet. I'm thinking of putting a scope on, at least a 4 power, and I have 3 choices available right now, an old K-8 Weaver, a newer K-4 Weaver with duplex, and a Leupold 6x with duplex. To expand my options I thought I'd look around for another used scope and came across a Glenfield scope on e-bay (there's two at the moment) Thought it might be cool to have a correct period piece to go on this gun(serial number dates it to 1967), but I'm worried about reliability, of course. Any opinions on these scopes, who made them, etc? From what I've read so far, the Japanese (tasco?) made ones are OK, try to stay away from the Chinese ones. Anyone use one? All opinions are appreciated, thanks.

Most of the garbage scopes sold today have optics better than those old scopes. If you want something historically accurate, fine. If you want to shoot, put on a decent quality modern scope. Tasco scopes are part of the"garbage" crowd. Avoid them like the plague.

I would take that leupold 6x and never look back. But then again I've recently been diagnosed as an "optics snob" in a concurrent thread because I refuse to waste my money on any more nc stars, tascos, bsa's, etc.

Maybe I can see if Art or Mike would change my username to "the snob" :D

Didn't realize that utilizing scopes which only cost half what the rifle cost would catapult me into this new territory. Not like I'm running nightforce or S&B's  Maybe there is a support group somewhere for this affliction....

Look for an older El Paso Weaver K3. I prefer them on lever guns because they have a straight tube on the objective end and just look right. Will it be as good as a cheap scope today? In some ways yes in some ways no. If you buy it right it will be more durable and track better than todays cheapish scopes but it's optics won't be all that great compared to scopes today.

If you are going for period correct and match, then by all means use the glenfield. As to who manufactured glenfield scopes, at one time they were manufactured by both redfield and bushnell. At least that is what the scuttlebutt was back then. If you dont care to aquire the glenfield, then the weaver K4 would also be correct.

Any of the scopes you mentioned would work just fine.
I have an old Weaver 4x Scope with steel tube, and fine cross hairs its been one of the most dependable scopes I have ever had.
I also have a Leupold, and its good too.

I have a 4x on my Savage M340 .30-30. I have a Weaver 4X on my Rem 700 in .308. After hunting with variable power scopes for years, I realized I only shot game on the 3X setting. I'm a fixed power guy these days...

TASCO are trash, I've busted more of 'em than I want to think about.
Biggest problem is getting them to hold Zero...after a certain amount of rounds,
they just seem to give up.

Redfield made some darn fine scopes over the years, their peeps were even better :)
Bushy's ok, at least two/three steps better than a Tasco, but some of theirs have had definite issues.

Leupold makes some of the best, same for Weaver & Nikon.

The scope I feel is the Most Appropriate??...
A Malcolm Scope. NOTHING looks more period than a Malcolm.

If you've got a brass gun, the Civil War brass tube scope is nice as well :)

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll pass on the Glenfields. Without actually holding one before purchase I don't feel at all comfortable, and I can't afford to throw money away on impulse buys. Also, I bought an old JC Higgins 30.06 Saturday, so gun funds are getting low....again. It also brings up another dilemma, it came with a Simmons 3x9, which is definitely coming off, so I'm thinking the Leupold on it, the K4 on the 30-30, put the simmons on my 552 rem. for #hits and giggles. Still have a k-8 as well, might have to find something to put it on...

I'm thinking of putting a scope on, at least a 4 power, and I have 3 choices available right now, an old K-8 Weaver, a newer K-4 Weaver with duplex, and a Leupold 6x with duplex.

Of those, the K-4 duplex. But, I'd go for a newer scope in a small size like 2-7x32mm. Redfield/Leupold makes a nice 2-7x for a fair price:
