Gimme something I can grab on to! Full grip vs Short..

Hey everybody! I thought this would be a fun and informative thread. It's about grip size. I recently decided to only carry those handguns that allow for a three finger grip. I'm fine with a two finger grip on the range. But, from experience - the range is not the street. When the time comes, I want to have a firm - unchanging purchase on my carry weapon. I carry a Springfield XDS 9mm (8+1 extended) which is just long enough for a three finger grip. However, I'm interested in a double stack .40 or .45 for fall/winter that fills the hand without being too tall in overall height. My Glock 22 for example is 5.5" tall and a little too big for civilian concealed carry. I would love to hear your recommendations on a compact vs subcompact? Thanks!!!

My PT 111 G2 gives me just enough room for a 3 finger grip with nothing extra sticking out ( I wear XL gloves). It can be had in .40 (PT 140 G2), as well. The 140 holds 10+1, and it is just slightly larger than the S&W Shield. I have been very happy with it, and it has been my EDC for about a year and a half now.

This was one thing I noticed the second I picked up my new P-01. Every bit of bulk from the grip is gone but there is just enough grip to perfectly fill your hand with no fingers hanging off. The P-01 is a 9mm but they do make a .40 called the P-06. If hammer fired guns are your thing.

Glock 19. BTW, I often carry a G21 concealed under an untucked shirt. I'm 5'8" with an average stocky build.

I'd go with an HK USP Compact, I'd prefer this in .45ACP myself, but you can get it in .40S&W if you like, and I'd want the Light LEM trigger variant:D

Hard to beat the Glock 23 for a winter compact. I like .45 so I go Glock 30S for non 9mm, non 1911. I use the 9 round mags with a pearce +0 baseplate. Very comfy.

I suppose you could stick with the XDS or go Shield, but those little single stacks are too thin for my preference.

Try Beretta PX4 sub compact .
Some pistols like the Ruger have a magazine available that is longer and much better for me .
Kahr PM pistols have too short a grip but the P is ok. Try them !

I think I am strange in that regard in that I prefer my pinkie be below the magazine if given the choice. The good news is the new crop of ultra-small firearms gives me a lot of choices

I like a full grip too.
I've been carrying a Glock 21 appendix IWB, was carrying a 19/23 before that.

The Glock 22 is about the same height as a regular 1911, many people conceal carry 1911's.

Good choice! I like the PCR because I don't need the rail, but the P-01 is a very close second for me.

Like labhoud suggested the Glock 23 sounds like a no brainer if you already have a Glock 22 and like shooting it. For .45 look at the Glock 30 series.

If you want to try DA/SA take a look at the HK P2000 for .40.

I have a Glock 26 and a 19. The 26 has the factory +2 extensions. I still prefer shooting the 19 but the 26 with the extensions is pretty comfortable.

Of course we all want the extra real estate when firing. The sole reason that shorter grips even exist is for concealment. 3 finger grip guns don't carry well in a pocket or on an ankle. I need at least one of each of previously described sized pistols in my stable.

I carry a 26 with a 15 round G19 mag. For me that combination is about as perfect as it can get. The boot works very well and is comfortable.
I think you could do this with a Glock 45

I too am annoyed with my pinky floating in space, but honestly I put up with it for ccw. Quite a few days I will throw on a duty sized pistol on the belt and wear a long shirt untucked over the pistol. Thats not really "concealed," but I don't really care as im in an OC state. I dont like OC per se, but it does mean i dont stress over printing. If I do care, a Sig P290 is the go to.

I, too, prefer a full grip. Generally, I don't even like extensions that attach to the magazine. If weather and wardrobe permit, dagnabbit, I want a full grip and I want the whole thing to be part of the frame. It was one of the factors that steered me towards the G19 over some of its competitors.

That said, I will carry a pinky-dangler in my pocket when it's just too hot to wear a cover garment.

Take a look at the G23.
