Gifted a Stevens 22-410 (questions)

Hello, newbe to the sight and i am hoping you guys might help me know what year my o/u is. Some notable features besides having a very pretty clear appearance (wood forend and stock is light to dark color, maybe walnut?) is the barrel selector on the right side and ramped rear sight. I do know this was made between 1939-50 but which? Also any idea how to fish out the selector holding screw that fell into the cock/trigger housing (Uncle dropped it in and never worked it out). Trully excited to OWN my first rifle/shotgun and appreciative of his generosity and yours for any info you can provide. Thanks, Paul-Boise

Thanks! Cool sight..

Now I am hoping i can find out something about my gun! I cant find the 22-410 Stevens specifically. Anyone have any other references maybe to research this rifle with?

You can try the Savage 24 forum: www.Savage24.com

If it was made after 1949, in 1949 Savage started stamping the Savage Letter Date Code (in a circle) into the action & barrel bottom metal, starting with "A".

AFAIK, there is no way to date earlier examples, except that specimens with Tenite stocks ( an early wood-grained plastic) were thought to be from 1939-41 (B-4 WWII).

Also, IIRC, all others had walnut stocks, up until the introduction of the later economy model Campers & side-lever Model 24-S.

If you remove the BP, then unscrew the buttstock retaining bolt, the buttstock can be withdrawn from the receiver to the rear, allowing access to the floating/lost screw.
