Gift Hose (Feathers)

One of my sons-in-law gave me a hand gun. I "think" it's a hand gun. Well, I think it's a gun of some kind. It's a Davis .32 auto. Makes me wonder. What did I do to *him?* I've read about these things but never saw one before. I don't think it quite qualifies as a "Saturday Nite Special." More like a Tuesday Morning Abomination. Well--it's the thought that counts--right? Remember when "Made in U.S.A." stood for quality? Is this thing safe to shoot or should I use it as a sinker next time I go fishing?

Tom,
I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. The thought process was probably close to "Hey, the old man likes guns. Here's one and I can afford it. Great gift." Assuming he didn't know any better, I would say keep it, display it prominently when he's around and make sure you take it when you go out shooting with him. If you really want to pitch it, let me know and I'll come get it.

Er. We have a Davis .380. LSW wanted a small auto for concealed carry, and the price was right. For a small, ridiculously heavy pistol, it is adequate for defensive purposes.
Safe to shoot? Almost certainly. (Assuming it isn't used and abused.)
Fun to shoot? Probably not...

Extractor retaining pin came out last year (10 years l8r!) which gave her the excuse to make a down payment on a Firestar M40. Man, why didn't I think of that... "Honey, I need a new pistol, the grips on my 1911 are cracked..." :p

Apology (kinda)

In the kids defense, he bought that Davis for his wife (my daughter). Now, thanks to some "good influence" (modest cough) they both have Makarovs and a Mossberg 12-bore for the house. He didn't know what to do with the Davis so he gave it to me. He's a good guy and I shouldn't have been so sarcastic and petty--and I really do know how to spell "Horse!"

Love 'em

Blades--they got four young'uns and they live out on a "farm." They save up all month to buy themselves a cigarette. Yer darn toot'n I convinced them to get Maks--it was the most gun they could get for the money. The Mak is a darn dependable shoot'n arn, and properly handled will do anything that needs doing. Regards, Tom K.

In defense of the Davis: they .32 I've seen can be reliable. They are heavy for the caliber but, in a blowback gun, that isn't all bad. Accuracy is poor but, again, adequate: roughly 4" at 21ft. If I recall correctly, they are stiker fired and not too safe for carry. The weak point is in the magazines.

Personally, I'd view Makarovs as a serious upgrade BUT a gift of a gun, even a poor one, is typically a good sign.

Use it for something besides a gun.
I have a Clerke 1st .22 revolver that I made into a bookend. It's much more functional now than before ;)

Besides, it may come in handy at the next "gun buy-back"...:D

(No! Don't hit me! It was a joke! A joke I tell you! Aaaaahhhhh!)
:p
