I received a gift card I wasn't too excited about for Christmas and I stumbled upon a WSJ article about reselling and buying discounted cards. I heard about this a few years ago, but gift cards were not as common and I don't remember the sites being nearly as customer friendly. I checked out the site and was surprised to see some of the discounts for outdoors retailers. 15% for Orvis, 12% at Dicks, 11% for north face and LL bean. Cabelas sold out, but also a decent discount. Not to mention all the other eateries, office supplies, and general retailers I am spending money at, although those have more moderate discounts. Walmart is only 2% for instance(still if you are spending $10,000 dollars a year there...)
Of course, most of the decently discounted cards are for places like Dick's where prices aren't that great to begin with and the products offered often are not the wuality I am looking for, but, they do run some awesome sales such as their legendary 870/500 combo deal run a couple times a year. Add a gift card with 12% additional off to such a sale and you make out like a bandit(you can stack this discount as the retailer has no idea you bought the card at a discount and doesn't care).
If I pay for the card with my credit card I get points there, so I don't lose them when I spend the card.
Plastic Jungle
That is the main site WSJ was talking about, but there are many others. Many have higher discounts, but I felt more comfortable starting with one that WSJ had done some research on and shipping is free, so even low dollar gift cards are worthwhile(didn't want to jump into this on a $500 card).
