Hello all,

Has any one had any experience with the Gibbs Quest II rifle? Based on an enfield carbine...even if you havent, take a look at the website http://www.gibbsrifle.com/sport.html any insite would be helpful. POS or perhaps somthing to look at? ALSO, would there be the possibility of even close to rapid reloading with this model (with that mount where it is?) Thank you

I have one. It is a very fun little rifle. Metal work is a little rough (it is after all an old Ishapore rebuilt) but the wood is very good. I would suggest shooting off of the bench as it was painful for me. Off hand is great.

As for the scope mount, as I have said before, it isn't worth the metal it is made out of. Considerable amount if Dremling required both on the mount and on the gun (non-critical area). The rifle (at least mine) is accurate enough for me with open sights.

Since the rifle accepts detachable magazines, I just bought a few more and reload that way instead of through the top. I had purchased my mags through Sportsman's guide. Not sure if they have any more.

Recoil, for a little gun, is actually not bad at all. The compensator that's part of the flash hider works very efficiently. I would estimate that the muzzle of my QEII rises no more that 3" under recoil off hand. I like the little gun overall. The only thing that I don't care for is the nickel finish, I prefer blue/parkerized.

There is at least one other TFL posters, however, who has had headspacing problem with his. Might want to check the Archives.

A recommendation on something similar? How about a Spanish Mauser FR8? It's a large-ring Mauser, short barrel with a flash spreader, chambered for 7.62x51 NATO. Probably not easy to put a scope on, though.

I have the Gibb's QE (.303).
Fun little rifle in a serious calibre.

The FR8 is the other choice. I've been looking hard at the QE II and the FR8. Might have to get both...

You might try the shortened Number Four "Tanker" version as sold by Gibbs and Navy Arms, I have a Gibbs version that has proven to be thouroughly enjoyable. Hope this helps.
 
As mentioned, the CETME FR-8 is another simple, short, light .308WIN that I am also considering getting myself. The only problem for me is that it is not a common thing where I'm at so I've actually only seen one up close. A bit rougher than the QEII as it is all surplus whereas the QEII is rebuilt but I'm sure it does the job as well. It is very inexpensive afterall.

Either gun would make an excellent low cost Scout Rifle.
 
Hum... You know, the Quest doesn't interest me much, but the one right below it, the Summit, certainly does. A bolt gun in .45-70...
