"Ghost-ring" sights. Aperture diameter?

Thinking of buying a piece of stainless steel sheet and, from it, cutting a rear "ghost-ring" sight, using my existing rear sight as a template.

The gun is a Ruger Redhawk 4.2" with adjustable rear sights.

What aperture should I drill out for these to work on my gun, in your opinion?

In case you are thinking "Why?", the answer is "Why not?!"
 
I can't help you with the diameter, but I had a Hi-Point 9mm that had a ghost ring rear sight in the box. I put it on, and I liked it. It seemed to work just as well, if not better than the conventional sight that came on the gun. I never really thought too much about it. It just worked. The theory that you don't "see" the rear sight apparently is right.
 
This has been tried many times. The "ghost ring" works on rifles, because it's close to the eye. On a handgun, it just becomes another rear sight, except that there's no way to precisely line it up with the front sight.

My advice; don't waste your time.
 
I have "one ragged hole" sights on two of my Rugers; my 6" GP-100 is pretty accurate with 3-4" groups at 50 yards.

They work well.

The apertures are pretty large compared to those on my rifles.
 
The ghost ring must be close to the eye to function properly --LONG GUNS only.
For rifle or handgun the front sight should be about 1/8" square post and the ring aperture 1/8" to 3/16" .The ring should be thin so as not to be obvious and block the view.
These sights are fast and accurate !:)

I hold the ones on my wheel guns at arms length and they work just fine.

I'm glad I didn't know that back when I was shooting the one I had. I thought they were working just fine.

Learn something new every day.
 
I've already bought a thin strip of steel: 0.8mm

It cost about €1.50.

The rest, assuming I have the right drill bits (5 or 5.5mm, and 7mm) is just my time.

With only about 5hrs of daylight, I'll have plenty of spare time indoors over the next month!!

We'll see!
 
You guys have obviously missed the whole idea of the ghost ring ! :rolleyes:
It's not that it can't "work" but the accuracy and speed will not be there.Ghost ring takes advantage of how the eye works.

The best handgun sight is the Patridge .Before he designed a sight Patridge asked a number of eye doctors how does the eye work. It was novel to get info before designing !! :rolleyes:The Patridge can also be used on rifles and is very good for that.
