GG&G Rem 870 Front Sling Mount

Ordered one from Brownless and they said it is ambidextrous. Got it today and don't know if it is. On the sling mount, the ball indent is on the right side of the mount, so the sling attachment faces to the left (for a righty). But on my shotgun, there is a little nipple looking thing where the cap screws on, so that the sling ball indent does not match up with the shotgun. I put it on and it seems to be stable, but I won't be shooting the gun until spring. These things ARE ambidextrous, right? I don't want to attach something to my shotgun that is not reliable.

Need a little more information.

Basically the ball detente on your sling mount is to secure the old style magazine nut and or Remington / scattergun tec style of magazine extension tubes that had engagement points (teeth) along the edge on the nut. The newer Remington design has teeth on the bottom face of the magazine cap and a plastic ratchet in the magazine tube that locks the cap in place. which do you have?

This is simply about keeping the magazine nut tight against the barrel band and is not really a major issue. if you nut loosens under firing conditions, a wrap or 2 of Teflon tape will keep it secure.:)

Most of the aftermarket sling mounts, extension tubes and light fixtures are based on applying to a 870 police model which retains the old style barrel band ball detente, however, with just a little brain power we can overcome the Great Gods of Remington.

Keep me posted on the outcome

Don't know what you mean by plastic ratchet. I do know that tightening the mag clamp makes clicking noises, and when I did put the clamp on, it seemed secure. There are teeth on the bottom of the mag clamp. Only reason I question it is because the ball on the mount is on the right, and the ball on the end of the mag tube is on the left.

bob, I believe I asked you this before: what is the proper way to remove the extended mag tube? I used to unscrew the clamp and extension in one piece, but while firing the gun, the whole thing popped off and the spring flew out! Someone told me to seperate the clamp, screw it on so it clicks a few times, and then screw in the extension tightly, before putting on the mag clamp.

Correct?

Probably means that you have a older style of magazine cap retainer or it has been altered by a previous owner. My above advice is still valid.

I am a little confused by your nomenclature, but I think you are talking about a Remington factory magazine extension. If so here is the drill. First screw the magazine extension nut (what you call a clamp) onto the fixed part of the magazine tube a turn or so, then screw on the magazine extension 3 to 4 turns, then screw the magazine nut firmly onto the barrel band, you will need to tinker a bit, but when it is right you will feel the extension butt into the magazine tube.

There should also be a true "mag clamp" a split figure 8 looking piece of metal with a screw thru it. It's job is to lock the whole affair to the barrel several inches from the muzzle. if you follow the link and look at the mag extensions on the scatterguns you will see the clamp I am speaking of. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_express_tactical.asp

Bob, thanks for the response. The mag extension came with the gun, so it is factory. The mag nut has teeth on the bottom of it, so I guess the ball indent on the sling mount locks into one of those as it is screwed on? So I guess the little bump on the shotgun is for those teeth on the bottom of the nut, which is probably what causes the clicking noise as you tighten the nut. So with the sling mount on there, the clicking sound is being caused by the ball on the mount clicking through the teeth?

If I put in on and the mount doesn't spin, it is correctly installed, right? If I can load 6 rounds in the tube and cycles them through the gun (without firing), I should be good to go, right?

As for the tightening of the mag extension, that's what I thought I had to do. Last year, while firing, the mag extension sperated from the gun and the spring flew out! I used to take the barrel and mag extension off in one piece, and I guess it wasn't being put back on correctly.

Sounds like you are "good to go". The answer to both your questions is YES.

Don't forget the magazine clamp, it will keep the whole affair secure.
