getting to your stand

How far will you drive your 4-wheeler/ utv / horse / snowmobile... or whatever your means of transportation are... up to your stand?

When you park.. how far away is it usually?

Never closer than 100 yards for me. I'd say 200 - 400 yards is my average. I normally park my vehicle/ATV in the woods about 10 feet off of the paved (gravel) road and walk in from there.

I do not have a stand or a four wheeler.
Dont need a fourwheeler or a stand to hunt squirre, rabbit etc.

May need one for coyotes though.

If it's outta sight and down wind you can park as close as you want. In my area, critters are used to hearing all sorts of vehicles like tractors, cars, trucks and ATVs. Of coarse that depends on your route and when you do it. In a lot of areas it's no more disturbing that walking in with a light on. We used to coon hunt with ATVs and critters will just sit and watch you drive by.

We usually park a several hundred yards away, but within sight.

We often find large deer tracks over the tire tracks we made on the way in and often see deer around the vehicles.

If you are in an area with lots of human activity then the location of your truck won't have much if any influence. The same goes for scent and noise.

On the lease I hunted for a long time, it was about 2 miles to the stand. Usually get to the stand a couple of hours before sun up and park 100-150 yards away off the path, not road. Makes it real easy to haul out the kill too.

I walk in. My hunting area (I'm a ground hunter) is about 1/4 away from where we park. Not bad going in as its all down hill. Getting out however, is a bitch. Especially dragging a buck out....

There will be an ATV in my near future.

On my last hunting lease, I parked and sat in a seat on the back of my 4 wheeler which became my hunting stand. Deer in that area were much more spooked by human scent left on the ground when walking in than they were from vehicles.

Since the owner of the land that we lease does not allow atvs I park my truck and walk in. He says he does not want to hear them at the early morning hours around his house.

We have a parking spot that is 200 yards from our spot. We choose to park about 1/2 mile farther away and walk in, deer don't like the smell of cars in the woods.

Depends how far I want to walk.

Most of my hunting takes place on land that is closed to motor vehicles and I have to walk in----prefer it that way----I enjoy the walk and the peace and quite when I'm on stand.

Perhaps that depends on the location. Around here the deer are used to pickups, cars, tractors, etc. driving around the property all year round. They seem to be spooked more by man scent from walking on the ground than by driving in your vehicle and parking.

While I don't think the deer care than much about a parked truck I will admit that we usually walk a long way, not so much to get away from the truck but rather to lessen the chances of other folks being where we are.

City hunters that drive 4 wheelers all over the place looking for deer really pee off the real country hunters. Deer can hear a 4 wheeler for 47 miles. You got feet, use them.:mad::mad::mad:

Simple, forget the 4-Wheeler:

Get a Bad Boy Buggy and "they will never hear you coming"!
Awesomely quiet and no smell from exhuast, etc. Makes no noise and I have actually drove up to my climber and killed deer from my treestand with it parked next to my tree.

I don't have any private land to hunt so no ATV usage for me. Where I park depends on where I hunt. Sometimes, it's less than 100yds from my stand, others it's over 2 miles. But I killed one small buck when I wasn't more than 20yds up a tree from my truck...

Funny story...

I was hunting a particular WMA. I was parking in a standard parking area. I was new to the stata and the area. So i guess I was hunting some where close to where some ole boys have been hunting for years. I never saw them in the woods, but everytime I came out from my hunt, I would find something messed with on my truck. License plate bent up, wipers out, wiper blades removed, ect, but no other vehicle. So one day I decided to give up a hunt to see what/who was going on. I climbed less than 20 yds from my truck, but in good cover. Right smack at daylight, I hear a deer comming up from behind me. It was a buck with his head down, not really paying attention. Well he gets to within 15yds and then sees my truck and stops. Too close, he catches one in the chest. Shortly after, here comes a truck. The feller gets out, goes over to my truck and starts to mischief. I shoot an bludgon tipped arrow about 5-7 yds in front of him. I thought I gave the man a heart attack. We had a few words, and I told him where I was hunting. He thought I was in "his" spot. So he was comming up to the parking area, seeing my truck, and going home. I was over a mile in the woods. But anyway...that was long.

walk in. park anywhere from 1/4-1/2 mile from it. really no way to park right at it,or within sight of it. road is blocked with big rocks and in bad shape for driving on anyways.

armedtotheteeth.... This comes from someone who in a past post said they play there calls for predators out of the truck speakers.. and hunts out of your truck... ok with me... I think its good in fact.. but come on.. we are all country or we would not be huntin...:D
