Getting started

I have recently placed my order for a Kel Tec PF9 for my CCW and eagerly await it's arrival. In the meantime I was hoping to get some suggestions on gear and accessories I may want to keep in mind such as cleaning and maintenance supplies, holsters, and so forth. I am open to all suggestions and I'm just looking to have the things I need to take care of my new purchase.

Yes, cleaning supplies are a must you may want to get a basic kit from someone like Wal-Mart, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain or other large retailer to get started. As time goes by and you read more here you may add additional materials based on your preferences. Be sure the kit you get covers the caliber of your handgun.

Give some consideration to how you intend to secure the firearm when it is not on you. This will obviously be influenced by your situation and risk factors presented by children, visitors, elderly adults, local crime risk, etc.

As for holsters I would recommend using the search function and see what others with similar guns are using. You also may want to just start off with a cheap holster to just sort of get the feeling of carrying. Also, do not forget the importance of a good belt.

Finally, save some money for ammo and range time.

Thank you very much for your reply.

So most general gun cleaning kits in my caliber would be adequate for my needs? Things like cleaning and greasing are all new to me. I have been around other peoples firearms and have a good bit of knowledge on techniques. But maintenance and being an owner is all a new road for me.

I have been looking at ankle holsters because that is the only way I can carry at work. I know it is far from ideal in terms of a speedy presentation but I would rather have it on me in some way instead of leaving it at home. I work in a location that doesn't exactly give peace of mind so being able to carry at work in some way is important. I have found this option for this gun does not have as many options as I would like. I have found 2 that seem to meet what I am looking for. With my limited knowledge in anything having to do with ankle holsters I am just going off of what I can research. These are the 2 options I have found.

Also the pocket clip option offered from Kel Tec themselves looks like a very good option for general on the go concealment. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks again to all of your help.

Start by reading the manual that comes with the gun. Also, visit the manufactures WEB site and look for any additional information or on-line videos they may have related to maintenance on your gun. Finally, simply use Google and search for “Cleaning Kel Tec PF9” and see what pops up. Remember You Tube videos are posted by just average folks, so review two or three and see which seems to match the manufacture’s recommendations the best.

Ankle holsters are notorious for being uncomfortable and kind of “flopping” around. However, if that is your only option than the example you suggested may be a good starting point. Really the only way to know what is going to work for certain is to experiment a little bit.

Thanks again for all the info. I will definitely check into that when I pick it up. I wish I could IWB carry but it just wouldn't work out with my uniform and job requirements. Carrying is against company policy but with the store not being in the safest area and my choice to carry I would rather be fired for having to use it than to be killed for not having it so ankle is the only way I can pretty much be sure it will not be accidentally seen.

Have you carried ankle before?

Have you carried ankle before?

No, I have considered it with some smaller guns, but have never really pursued it seriously. I do think it is valid option for certain situations such as yours, but just never really had the need myself.

Oh, just noticed you’re in Waycross, so ever get out in the swamp?

That it very true. I consider it my last option so if not at work I plan to carry it in a different fashion.

I am extremely surprised someone else knows where Waycross is haha. I have a couple of times and it is pretty great. Most of this summer was taken up by those awful wildfires we had here. Going to work in smoke so thick it's like dense fog was definitely a life experience. I Moved up here from Dunedin, FL about a year ago.

Gear, ammunition(9x19mm), cleaning products...

If you are new to firearms/shooting sports, I'd suggest these websites/products;
For cleaning/parts see: www.Brownells.com www.MidwayUSA.com www.Natchezss.com www.cabelas.com .
The best bet would be a simple synthetic CLP(clean lube protect) like LPX, Weaponshield, Gunzilla, Slip2000 or the German product; Ballistol.
Other products include Hoppes #9, BoreSnake Viper, Birchwood-Casey Synthetic Gun Cleaner.
For duty or protection uses, only carry factory made ammunition; NO reloads or hand loaded rounds. Top 9x19 loads include the Golden Saber bonded 124gr JHP +P, the Ranger T bonded 124gr JHP +P, the Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P, the Corbon DPX, the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP, the PowRball.
See www.ShopCorbon.com www.SGammo.com www.cabelas.com .
I'd join the NRA too, they help protect your 2A/gun owner rights. Learn your area's gun & use of force laws. See www.Gunlawguide.com www.handgunlaw.us .
Keep your new 9mm secured in a locked case or safe(unloaded if not in use for protection). For cases/bags see; www.Galls.com www.uscav.com www.policehq.com www.qmuniforms.com .
