Getting Stains off of Stainless Steel???

:confused:Hello all. I have been given the task of looking after a Smith and Wesson J-frame stainless revolver by a good buddy of mine as he's headed back to Alaska prior to shipping out to Afganistan. Appearantly his uncle was looking after the gun while my buddy was in Iraq and the gun looks like hell. It is stainless like I stated before but it is in fact stained. I have pics that I will try to post but does anyone have any ideas in the mean time? So far I've tried Kroil, stainless steel polish(slightly abrasive) and I did perform a search but the only results pertained to nicks and scatches. I was going to try 0000 steel wool but was worried that might dull the finish. I would really like to "polish" her up for my buddy as a very small "thanks" for his sacrifice...... any thoughts or advice would be great. Thanks

Try "Birchwood Casey Lead Away" cloths. Those little yellow towels are amazing on stainless. They come in sealed plastic bags and are reusable. With a little bit of rubbing, ANYTHING will come off of your stainless. Good as new!

:DMike, thanks a ton for your information. The polishing cloth worked wonders. All the stains have been removed!! Have a great 4th of July.
