Getting rid of my P220

I've got a West German Sig P220 circa 1990 (KA). It has a nickel finish & four nickel mags, but no factory box.
I recently got my concealed carry permit & this seems quite heavy to carry.
I've had several people wanting to trade Gen 4 & 5 model 19 Glocks, but I'm thinking I'd rather have a P229 or a Glock model 32, assuming it could handle the pressure of a .357 Sig.
Is my Sig worth more than what these people are offering for trade? I have no idea as to its' worth, only that "it's worth as much as one is willing to trade.
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information around if you look for it.

For your particular situation let me be a little flippant and refer you to one of our member's personal rules (which I whole heartedly endorse.)

Cheapshooter's rules of gun ownership #1: NEVER SELL OR TRADE ANYTHING!

If you really want something light to carry the Ruger LCP .380 can be had for under $200.

But a better plan might be to stay with what you know you can shoot, try a bunch of other guns at ranges that rent them and then save up for another gun that you MIGHT like and if it doesn't work out then go back to the gun you already own.

Good luck and stick around for the fun.

The SIG P220 is a full-size duty pistol made for Law Enforcement.

It is not a concealed carry pistol. And for an all-metal full-size .45 ACP, it is actually pretty light, quite a bit lighter than a 1911, and makes an excellent belt gun for the lawman.

Plenty of people carry full sized guns. It's takes a good Belt and holster to do it though. There is a ton of reasonable priced guns that are a lot easier to carry.

I agree with the other posters don't sell out trade it.

It's a Sig, they hold value pretty well. A lot of cheapskates are going to try to low-ball
you. Stick to your price, a serious buyer will come along.

I don't see too many nickel sigs around, so I think it's definitely worth more than the trades you're being offered. If you like it, I'd hang on to it and carry it...it isn't all that big. Else pick up a used glock or something if cost is an issue. My two cents...

If you're looking for a lightweight double action pistol please consider the CZ P-07. If the pistol has Cajun Gun Works Pro Grade internals and CZ night sights I would consider a straight trade if I were in your circumstances.

I used to think "never sell" but after Katrina and the flooding Baton Rouge had last year it's senseless to have things you cannot carry with you. Better to find what works and have multiple.

That, and ALWAYS have a 9mm Glock.

Give up a W. Germany made, nickel P220 for a G19? I wouldn't even consider it unless they were kicking in at least $500 to boot. Even then I'd regret it.

They’re yet to make a glock I’d trade my p-220 for. In fact it would take a g20sf and enough cash to buy another 220 for it to leave my safe.

You also need to inform anyone trying to screw you over to bleepoff and die. They know they’re hosing you on purpose, if they’re actual friends I disassociate completely from them because they useless bleepholes. Nothing pisses me off worse than scumbags trying to take advantage of people.

If you dispose of the 220 you WILL regret it. It is a fine ACCURATE firearm. And, has been stated, light for it's caliber. I have a 220 and a Glock 19. Yes, I carry the 19 but only for it's greater capacity. It's not as accurate as the Sig nor does it "feel" as good. Don't make a mistake KEEP the Sig. Or, I'll trade you my Glock Flat Dark Earth Gen 4, even up.

I wouldn't part with the P220 if I were you. Find a range that rents and get some trigger time in with various pistols. Decide what pistols best suits your needs, and start saving for it. You can carry the P220 in the meantime.

You won't regret keeping the P220, but you'd probably regret selling it.

West German Sigs in good working order will always have good resale value. Look over at Gunbroker to get an idea of used Sig prices. In general your gun would be worth much more than any Glock in similar used condition.

but I'm thinking I'd rather have a P229 or a Glock model 32

You have to try a P229 before you buy. I like Sigs, love the P220 and P226, but the P229 is too fat in the grip for me.

Not a fan of the 357 Sig, too noisy for me, but of the 2 I would go with the Glock 32 (with .40 conversion barrel). Had the Glock 19 (same frame) and it was a great gun, really nice and trim.

W. German SIGs are worth holding on to FOR SURE. The later guns just marked "Germany" are less valuable and some consider them of lesser quality.

That being said, any SIG P220 is a solid performer, it's just the "W. Germany" marked ones are phenomenal in all regards and are considered by experts to be the finest SIGs ever made.

What’s worked best for me is using two guns for CC, a small (LCP) and big(G23) carried individually or together that gives the most flexibility.

So my advice to you sir is keep the Sig and buy something small and plastic.

At the risk of offending pretty much everyone that has posted so far, here's my advice:

If you have a gun you're not using (the Sig) and want to trade it for a gun you will use (the Glock), then go ahead. Don't let us stop you. Better a "lowly" Glock on the belt than a "valuable" Sig collecting dust.

I have owned two Sig 220s over the years and traded them both, with absolutely no regrets whatsoever. Now, if you personally like the Sig in and of itself and want to keep it as a collectors/range piece, then sure. I have plenty of guns that I own just because I like them. But don't feel compelled to keep the Sig just "because it's a Sig". If you like it, keep it and buy an inexpensive plastic carry gun (ie: Shield, G43, etc) to carry. If you don't, then trade it.

Now, to answer your question on deciding trade values: go on Gunbroker and see what the Sigs (like yours) are selling for. Try to get that much value in a trade. I would expect someone to kick in at least $400-$500 on a trade like that... but maybe you're willing to go lower. In which case, don't let us guilt you into stopping. They're your guns, do what you want.

So your saying that the P226, 9MM, with W/Germany on the slide, that I bought years ago is a little more valuable than my Late P226, .357 SIG?

I do believe the quality on the W/Germany P226 9MM is excellent, many rounds of all sorts through it (including various reloads) and it never lets me down. I couldn't even start to give you a round count on it.

I have a W.German made P228 and a P6 that are a lot older than the amount of time that I have owned them, but they have been flawless in that time. But I also have “new” production SIGs, an M11-A1 and a P239 SAS Gen2, which are both excellent firearms. I’m very pleased with all of them!
