Getting pelted with residue from my new Sig Trailside

I was at the range yesterday shooting my new Sig Trailside when I noticed that every other round I fired was kicking very small pieces of hot black material out at me. I assume this was compacted carbon and powder residue built up around the breech face, but I have only fired 300 rounds through it. Is this normal for a .22lr? I have never had this happen in any other SA? I guess it is time for a good cleaning.

well i don't know bad it is for you but compared to me you aren't that bad off. i have an old hi-standard modle 103 and i'm left handed. whenever i shoot it after only about 20rounds it starts spitting the black stuff all over my left hand (i think this may have something to do with it but maybe it also happens to righties as much). so i'm in pain whenever i shoot it and i don't want to get little scars on my hand every time i shoot the gun. i have no idea how to stop it but most .22 pistols seem to spit at the shooter quite a bit.

Sounds like you have oiled your gun too much. Just a small drop or a light film is all you usually need. You should not be getting things flying out of an auto(besides bullets) if it is clean, properly lubricated, and in good mechanical shape. This is disapointing news if it is a design problem. Hopefully none of the black stuff you are talking about will ever bounce into the barrel in front of a live round. Clean your gun. If this happens again, send it to a smith or send it to SIG. ddt

By any chance were you shooting Federal Lightning, Winchester Wildcat, PMC, Aguilla, or other cheap .22 ammo? If so switch to a high grade std or high velocity .22, like Federal T22, Winchester Super-X, or CCI Mini-Mag before sending the gun in. Some of the cheaper ammo uses a very dirty powder that doesn't burn completely and it could be blowing back on your hand when ejecting.
