Getting new gun...Looking for opinions on Walther P99 or other "carryable" .40 cals.

I'm going to get another gun to go with my G30 and I need some feedback on the P99. I want to get something in .40 cal and the P99 seems to be the way to go based on what I've seen so far. I have a Tx. CHL and being a good carry weapon is definitely at the top of the "needs" list. I carry my G30 currently and it is perfect but anything else I get needs to be be almost as perfect. Any suggestions if the P99 is not the best choice? By the way I had a G22 and sold it to get the G30 so the G22 is out of the running. Thanks in advance for any help....

Ok get a glock 23 or 27. Or try a Beretta cougar. Or a Sig 229, 239 or an Hk usp Compact. I have owned all but the USP compact but I have shot a buddies and its a good pistol as are the rest. If you want a small thin pistol try the sig 239.

The P99 is a great carry pistol, its light, high capacity mags available, thin and the grip is so sweet, it makes drawing it easy. If your G30 is perfect to you though, the P99 may be too big, its not huge but is .35inch longer and .61inch taller, but it is thinner and I believe fully loaded its lighter. I carry a Walth daily but also love my 357sig USP compact. Its a breeze to carry, accurate, & small. I dont have any experience with Sigs but I imagine theyre as good as HK or Walthers.......all are the finest German engineering.

Those are the exact three models I was going to recommend. I own a Glock 27 and a Beretta Cougar 8040. They are the two most comfortable pistols I have ever owned for CCW.

Seeing as I own both, I feel qualified to answer. First, let me say that I am not a fan of, nor do I own anything chambered for the 10mm Kurtz. My P99 is in the tried, and true 9mm!!! The G30 is a great pistol, BTW, and I do carry it when I feel the need for a hand cannon!! I carry the P99. This is my second one, having sold my first one in a stupid fit of anger years ago. I carried it then too. IMHO, it is the most concealable full size service auto in the world. In the intervening years, I have tried almost every pistol that you could think of from Berettas to Taurui. I came back to the Walther. It is a more accurate gun than my middle aged, bi-focaled eyes will allow, but I do alright. The recoil is quite tame, and I like the adjustable grips. Standard capacity 16rd mags are EXPENSIVE:eek: . When they can be found at all. Mine came with two, as standard equipment!!!:p My advice is not to abandon your G30, but augment it with the P99!!! God, I hate to do this, but if you MUST deface yourself, and shoot the 10mm Kurtz, (I am loath to even speak it's vile name) then the Walther is the way to go. At least you will have a "gut Deutsche waffe"!!!!! Now, go do the right thing, and buy that Walther!!!!

Carrying a .40S&W and the choices. . .

My P229 is a great pistol. have both a .40S&W and a .357 Sig barrel for it and it is quite accurate. A bit more so in .357 Sig then in the .40S&W, but nothing that I'd notice in the middle of a pistol battle.

My P99 QPQ in .40S&W is nearly as accurate. The duo-tone finish really is unique also. And it is slimmer then the P229. If only it came in .357 Sig!

The ulitmate pistol for non IWB carry though?

Get the duo-tone P229! :D In .357 Sig! ;) You have the cool look, availability of full cap (yeah those extra 2 rounds really matter! ;)) mags and great accuracy.

scoops - what's the fifteen round bit?!

The Walther P99 9mm is "16+1" with a factory high-cap.

Fifteen rounds is so passe.

If you have (and plan to keep) your G-30, there is a strong argument in favor of the G-23 or G-27. They will allow you to maintain the same "system" (operating system) - picking up one will be just like picking up the other. In a high stress situation, you may be thankful for this consistency.

In addition, both the G-23 and the G-27 are excellent, DEPENDABLE weapons. I own both, and wouldn't trade or sell either one. The G-23 is a little easier to grip and shoot (for me). The G-27 conceals slightly better since it is slightly smaller. Most people add the Pearce grip extender to the G-27, making its size even closer to the G-23.

If I were FORCED to give up one of these, I would keep the G-23 (13 + 1 vs. 10 + 1 plus a slightly bigger grip).

Ideally you will be able to rent several different pistols before buying.

Give the Kahr K40 a look. It is great for concealed carry and very accurate. The trigger pull is long but smooth as butter. I have others but for really good concealed carry in the hot Texas summers it's the one I pack most often.

I tried a G27, and found it too uncomfortable to shoot, but it would probably be fine for a carry gun. The only .40 I have is a Beretta 96, and it's a little large for CC though I have carried it now and then.

Mjsarge,
I just picked up a Military green Walther P99 in 40cal but havent fired it yet.....If I were to get another 40,I would pick up a Two-Tone Sig 229...Pretty damn sweet !!

having a p-99, which is in my opinion the best firearm that i have shot, my recommendation is for the walther p-99. avoid the S&W hybred, it is junk from everything i've heard. unless you really need the .40cal i'd go for the 9mm, you can get standard capacity mags for it <16 rounds>. the mags are a little pricey, paid $125 for mine.

the p-99 is a full sized, yet concealable firearm. i recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I second the Kahr K40. Its a little heavy, but that helps with the recoil. It conceals in a pocket or a good IWB holster. For warmer weather, it's my daily carry and I barely notice I'm carrying it in my Kramer holster. When wearing only a T-shirt, it goes in my right fron pocket in a cheap Uncle Mike's pocket holster.

As A carry gun the P99 is not on my list. I have been sour on my P99--9mm for some time. Since the New Jersey State Police discontinued the P99 and went back to their HKs I have no confidence in that weapon as my carry gun. Depending on what guns you have been using before, the P99 is a great one, or not such a great one. I personally prefer the HK-SIG-and GLOCK--in that order.Keep the G-30 handy. It's a good one that can be trusted..I HOPE !!:)

For the record, the NJSP did NOT issue/carry the WALTHER P99. The carried the S&W 99. In addition, their's were futher modified to meets their specifications. You cannot reasonably use the NJSP experience to judge the Walther P99 (or probably not even the commercial S&W 99).
