Getting all the reloading data to sync

I just received my first reloading press. I am looking up the data on line to build my cartridges. I was sold Winchester 310 powder for the 44 mag/special and 38 special I planed to reload. I am finding a lot of time the formula wont include my powder or it will work on a bullet 20 grains lighter. Is there a way to convert my powder load to work, I dont want to have to buy a different powder for every load.

(example I can load a 44 with a 220 grain bullet with 231, but a 240 grain bullet they want you to use 244 powder)

Thanks

Welcome to the forum Scooter357. There’s lots of good information here and some really, really knowledgeable folk. If Unclenick ever tells you something, take it to the bank.

I’m just one of the great unwashed so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Buy a couple of reloading manuals and pick the recipes from these. If they don’t list a particular combination of bullet and powder you can check around but realize they might not list one because that combination does not work/play well with each other. If you have to buy another type of powder just consider it part of the adventure.

Winchester 231 is a great favorite of many reloaders. I wonder if the 310 powder you’re referring to is VihtaVouri N310?

Welcome Scooter

the easiset way to load data for powders is at the powders manufacturers site. For Wincester 231 you would go to the Hogdon/IMR/Wincester powder data site

link - http://live-hodgdonreloading.pantheonsite.io/

click agree and when in the site input your caliber, bullet weight and powder in the drop down boxes and it will tell you if that powder has been tested with that bullet weight and what the minimum and maximum charge. I assume the Winchester 310 is a typo since there is no such thing and Vihtavuori has no load data for the 44 mag for their N310 on their website

You must have at least one reloading manual; more is better. Some are better than others but all have important info beyond just loads. Right now you're reloading blind and that's unhealthy for your personal being.

I was sold Winchester 310 powder

Based on other parts of your post I assume you meant Win 231 ? As houndawg points out the Hodgdon web site has data for both bullet weights using Win 231 .

"...convert my powder load to work..." Start by buying a manual. I'd suggest the Lyman. It's far more versatile than any powder or bullet maker's book. You need to read a manual before you do anything.
Close in weight is ok, some times, but 20 grains difference in bullet weight is too much. For example, if you have a 205 grain cast bullet, 200 grain cast data will do. However, you cannot use jacketed bullet data with a cast bullet.
No mixing powder data. If you want to use 244 and there's no data, it means Hodgdon either didn't test 244 with that weight or the powder isn't suitable. Mind you, Hodgdon's site shows 220 and 240 grain 231 and 244 cast and jacketed data.

Welcome:

I will go with a Hornady or a Speer manuals or both. For your needs Hornaday 9 will do and its on sale as X had some out.

The reason I recommend those is the very wide bullet selection and powders to go with them.

And an example of close but too much was my recent loading in a rifle.

I thought I was in the 175 to 178 section, when I was in the 165-168.

First and lowest charged rounds had pressure signs, hint but a fairly strong one.

The scone charged round were clearly over with all worse and a blown primer.

Some of the rounds would not seat a prime (loose) and one would not re-size.

While the online stuff is great, I find books better other than one off and I then just write that in the book.

On line can be a major help with a newer powder that has not made it into the books.

I think we need scooter357 to come back and confirm what powder he actually bought.

And whether he has bought (or at least ordered) a reloading manual or two.
