German outrage - dealing with terrorists

Germany has quietly released a Hizbollah member jailed for life for the murder of a U.S. Navy diver, apparently disregarding Washington's wish to extradite him, diplomats and German officials said on Tuesday.

and in "unrelated" news:
The German government offered scant details on Monday after the foreign minister's sudden announcement on Sunday evening that Osthoff was in the safe custody of the German embassy in Baghdad after a three week hostage ordeal.

Germany lets go an islamic terrorist who murdered a US serviceman, in exchange for one of it's citizens, one that hasn't even lived in Germany in a decade or more.

With "allies" like this, who needs enemies?

Not the first time

After utterly botching both the "security" of the Munich games AND the fiasco of the rescue of the hostages, Germany staged a hijacking in order to have an excuse for its release of the terrorists who survived the kidnapping/murder of the Israeli team.

Put Germany two notches above Spain and one above France....... :barf:

Another round of Euro-bashing. How exciting. *yawn*

These threads never amount to anything other than a mind-numbingly boring string of "The Frenchies/Germans/Euro-Weenies are all poopy-heads/cowards/socialists."

Really, that the murderer of a US serviceman was let go, to go home no doubt to a "hero's" welcome, excites no anger or indignation? That our supposed ally and friend is cravenly capitulating to terrorist's demands causes you no concern?

I'm glad I'm not so jaded that such things bore me.

Uhmmmmm....................There's a silver lining to this. Now that he has been released from the protection of a German jail, we now have the opportunity to hunt the SOB down and do whatever we want with him.;)

I have seen no evidence that the release of this guy was related to the release of the German hostage. From what I read in German newspapers, he had served his term, and was up for a parole hearing, where they granted him parole. Of course, if you want to believe that the two are connected, no amount of debate will convince you otherwise.

What the Germans do with their prisoners is completely not our business. If you think that justice has not been served by this guy's conviction in a court of law and subsequent prison term, you should be glad he was released...like stevelyn said, our spooks can get a hold of him much easier now that he's been released into the wild.

he had served his term
How did he serve a life sentence, in 10 years?
And why, if he served such a rediculous short term, wasn't he handed over to American law enforcement?

2 + 2 = what? What other excuse could there be for releasing someone sentenced to life in only 10 years?

How do you know he was sentenced to life? Also, are you aware that there are two kinds of "life" sentences in the German jurisprudence? One is called "lebenslänglich", and denotes a life sentence with the possibility of parole. From what I know about the case, that's exactly what happened here: his term had reached the required length for a parole hearing, and he was granted parole. (He was in jail for eighteen years, whereas the minimum term one must serve in a lebenslänglich sentence is fifteen years before parole eligibility.)

Could there be a connection between his release and that of the hostage? Sure. Do we have conclusive proof of that assertion? No. Is there a point to this discussion if you believe with 100% certainty that this is a fact?

You and I may not like that, but he was captured, tried and sentenced under German law. Not much you or I can do about it.

My gripe about the whole fiasco is the failure to extradite, if true, a typical slap in the face from our so called ally.

I would not expect anything more from them.

Caveat: If there was no request by the US to extradite, then this whole thread is a waste and my comments above are a waste of bandwidth. Their country, their laws. We parole killers too.
