Georgia takes a forward step

Beginning tomorrow our carry permits will again substitute for a NICS check. Many thanks to those who helped make this happen.

Unfortunately effective July 1 I can't renew my license at the North Annex anymore. Fulton County Police are leaving (because of the Sandy Springs incorporation) and the new city police are taking over. The probate court won't allow other law enforcment agencies to fingerprint you. Must go downtown and park in a place where you need a gun but can't carry!

Hawkman, that is great news! I was afraid Sonny might let us down on that one.

Do you have an official reference on this issue? I am having a hard time finding anything.

Hurray!!!! Not that the stupid check was anything more than a headache to me anyway. I usually like to buy from ole Joe at the gunshow that way there's no paperwork!:D

"Do you have an official reference on this issue? I am having a hard time finding anything."

Only that when I bought my Glock 19 on July 2nd they filled out my permit info on the 4473 and did not call in for a nics check. I'll see if I can find a cite.

I can't find anything "Official" except at packing.org, BUT I was in a gunshop today lookin at a pt-745 and asked the owner He said that Georgia has their crap straight again and CC license takes the place Of NICS check when purchasing firearms!

Took less than 45 days to get mine. I just wish they lasted longer than five years. Sorta like the drivers license here, now I can get one that lasts for 10 years.

NDIrish, the OCGA requires that the Judge of the Probate Court issue a Georgia firearms permit NO LATER than 60 days from the date of the application, barring any negative information. If you're in a county where the Judge of the Probate Court is in violation of the law, maybe you should bring the appropriate statute to his/her attention!

Problem is it is also required that the license not be issued before the Fed background check therefore it could be either of the two.

contender: How about posting a copy of the statute about which you posted? I'm absolutely, positively sure that you're incorrect!! There is no federal law regulating the issuance of firearms licenses by states, and there sure isn't anything in the OCGA regarding federal approval.

Edited: Found a reference, in packing.org, to an "Unofficial" AG opinion that the Probate Judges can wait (I suppose indefinitely) for the return of a report. That's contrary to the clear verbage of the law and contrary to the obvious legislative intent.
