They're "fast-tracking" changing our Georgia flag from one with the stars & bars to a PC-bland mush flag! Look here:

http://206.112.97.70/forum/a3a716c110d65.htm

for the discussion & polls. From reply #34:

There is not much time...the vote is tomorrow. The only way we are going to succeed is by action..NOW. Phone Calls, e-mails, faxes, etc.

Forget about arguing the merits of the flag. No one will listen because it is such a devisive issue. Save that discussion for another day. My objection all along has been the process. Let the citizens of Georgia decide.

Here's a way to contact your Reps-- hunt around, you'll find a link to email individual Ga. Senators, plus other contact info:

http://www.conservativeusa.org/megalink.htm

Pass this on to other boards, e-lists, etc.-- those arrogant SOB's in Atlanta are trying to pull a fast move on us!

Get busy, folks.

Dan, thanks for the link!
The Sierra Times article was encouraging, but anyone interested in this "issue" needs to raise Caine with their Reps, newspapers, talk shows, etc today!

They ought to place it before the voters, and decide once and for all.... I see little support for this PC bilge among my black friends- it's more the product of a very small, but very noisy few....

It's not the Stars & Bars!!!!

The Battle Flag that currently is on the Ga. flag is the St. Andrew's Cross, or the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia - it is NOT the Stars & Bars! Do a web search on "Confederate Flags" & check for yourself if you don't believe me. If you don't even know what you're supporting, it makes your views suspect.

It's past time to change it anyway - It was changed from a flag that was based on the Stars & Bars in 1956 to show resistance to integration. That's a simple fact. My mom has worked at the capitol for 30+ years - she knows a lot of the people that voted to change it & why they did. Change it and move on. Let's put our efforts where they'll make a difference, not on a symbol that's been discraced by everyone from our state senate to the KKK, skinheads, etc. I'll honor my ancestors with whatever flag I choose, but the state flag shouldn't be a symbol that was chosen to represent unequal treatment for some of Georgia's citizens.

johnr,

I was being a wisea$$ about your post not being gin-related, I mean gun-reloaded, I mean gun-related ...:)

But since the moderators here don't have a problem, let me address your post.

I am a sixth generation descendant of a Scottish immigrant from the Highlands just over the water from the Isle of Skye who served as a member of the Continental Army, while still under the oath he was forced to sign as a disarmed barbarian clan member to never raise arms against the crown. I am also a descendant of a member of the FLorida 10th Infantry (and Appalachicola Guard in a different muster) that served the CSA.

For the record, I don't like the way it is being done. I just think there are other issues more worth the rallying effort. Time to move on.

A similar issue ... Old Glory. I do not support a Constitutional Amendment to outlaw desecration of the U.S.Flag. Why? Because, I believe the laws of this land, as established by our brilliant forefathers, allows each and every one of us to behave as idiots. Disrespect to the Flag is an insult to all who believe in this enterprise, not just those who have served. And here is a difference between the sides in this cultural war. We know we don't have a guarantee against being insulted. The other side doesn't know that. Reference: Confederate Battle Flag issue :).

To wit: we must be consistent. Don't expect the other side to do the same. HOW we win is important. This will all be tallied one day.

'Just my opinion.

sensop & all

Points taken.... I really don't care what the dam' thing looks like-- the battle flag of the Imperial German Navy would be OK by me ( that's Kaiser Bill's navy, not der Furher's ), it's the way they are trying to sneak it by that offends.
The most current update I've found is here:

http://www.sierratimes.com/archive/starticles/2001/jan/arga013001.htm

sensop, my people went from Scotland to England to Holland, back to England, then went to Cape Hatteras- had one of the first land grants there. My grandfather ( and no, I'm not that dam old, the men in my family live long & had kids late ) fought in the Civil War for the South. Too poor to hardly feed his own, he hated slavery, but hated coersion more.

IMO, this is just a PC attempt to homogenize away our uniqueness.

And the only options are resist or capitulate-- notice how little ( if anything ) "compromise" got for South Carolina.

But I still say the way they are trying to do it is the antethesis of government ''by the people.''

The reason for my $0.02 genealogy recital was just to show that I have as much reason to defend the symbols of our 225 year struggle as the next person, by way of contrast with the stand I take on this particular issue. 'Wasn't trying to imply I was any more qualified to lecture than any one else. Didn't mean for it to read that way. ...:)

Not at all-- your linage is quite interesting!

Oddly enough, I haven't heard a peep about this all day on radio news, except at noon Gov. Barnes was broadcast quoting "letters to him supporting changing the flag..." obviously he wasn't interested in mine!

Maybe time will prove me wrong, but I suspect that a whole bunch of State Reps and Senators will get sent home in '02, along with Barnes. I would accept a change if it happened by statewide referendum, but I suspect Barnes is promising $$$ to programs in districts in exchange for a vote to change.

It was changed from a flag that was based on the Stars & Bars in 1956 to show resistance to integration. That's a simple fact. My mom has worked at the capitol for 30+ years - she knows a lot of the people that voted to change it & why they did.

Danger Dave,
I'm sure your mother is a fine woman and not wanting to get into a personal battle I'll try not to sound as offended as I am when I say this but... you don't know what the h&ll you're talking about. The post 56' flag was not adopted to protest integration as the left wing media whores would have you believe. I bet you heard that on CNN today didn't you? The flag was proposed by two GA state senetors to honor GA's southern heritage during a time when it was being desecrated by the same kind of people doing so today. In fact, these two senetors, Davis and Hardin, were known for their level headedness when it came to these issues and official state and federal documents still around today support this. The fact is, Gov. Roy Barnes gave into the will of a very small number of Georgians because he wants to go down in history as the man who changed GA's flag. Did he let the people decide? No. He bribed and out right blackmailed government officials with state funding and programs that he'll probably withhold now because of the obvious link to this vote!

If you don't even know what you're supporting, it makes your views suspect.

My sentements exactly.

JOHNR, I'm not happy about the way the change has happened (notice post tense). But, our flag does not belong over the state house. We lost that war. It belongs over Confederate grave yards, monuments, and at reunions. Are you a member of SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) or MOSB (Military Order of Stars and Bars)? Get involved in our heritage! Join! And as one of the other posts mentioned, there are much more important issues facing us ... Second Amendment protection. This from a guy whose family has been in the South since 1760 and has ancestors from every family tree branch who served in the Confederacy. I live in Columbus; I was at the Flag Rally on Jan. 20 and I was proud to be there. But....there are other citizens who are offended by our flag and don't need it shoved down their throats. Lets work at getting it out of the hands of the KKK and skin heads and back in its proper perspective. Would I like to see Yankees need a passport to get down here? Sure...but it didn't work out that way. Barnes was right. Let it go...I have.

I'm no racist, never have been. I've always judged men by the "content of their character" and not by their race, faith or national origin.

I'm also a natural born "Southerner" and decended from a long line thereof. I have a heritage. I have never believed slavery was a "correct" practice but it was unfortunately once a "legal" one. I know that the Northern Aggressors were a lot more concerned about having to compete with the low cost of Southern products (due to slave labor) than they were with the slavery it's self.

I don't have to look very hard to find things in today's "politically correct" world that offend me. I'm offended almost daily. I don't have a right to NOT be offended! Nobody does. I am, however, being prevented more and more each day from being able to celebrate my heritage while having other group's heritage thrust upon me. I certainly don't mind these other group's celebrating their birthright - I just wish they would leave mine alone.

How long before we can't even use the term "Southern" any more? We'll just have the North and the "Less North", which will fit since we are considered to be "less" aren't we?

Mikey

Ditto, Mikey. I'm in hot water at work because I popped off at a member of management when he razzed me about the flag. May not even be employed at weeks end...that's when they let us 'undesireables' go. Bottom line is, join SCV or MOSB. My camp is a bunch of grey hairs, including me. If we don't get some young blood, we are dead in two generations and Southern won't even matter. Same is true of the 'gun culture'. Get younguns involved, take 'em shooting, don't sit silent when our PC-brethren spout off about 'safety' and 'children'.

To paraphrase my co-moderator-in-crime LawDog: This started out as a quasi-political discussion and has since devolved into a re-hashing of the previously discussed topic.

Said discussion should be taken to other Forums devoted to these subjects, or to e-mail.

Sorry folks, but it just don't fit in here.
