In a previous thread George mentioned a Mac PCP package for my Colt Pony. I am sorry for my ignorance but what does this mean? I am assuming it is some custom work. Is there a web site? Does anyone wish to add a testimonial to this type of modification? Also I continue to hear that .38/9mm is the smallest caliber to use as a defensive firearm. Is there any .380 ammo out there that would be raise the effectiveness of this caliber? My Pony likes 102 gr. Golden Sabers in terms of accuracy and reliability. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Patto, I can't comment on the mod but I can lend an opinion on the ammo.

A good quality defense ammo like "CorBon" in +P should do you quite well. Be sure that before you trust your life to this ammo that you shoot at least 100 rounds through the pistol withou having ANY failures. As you know, different guns prefer different ammo.

Golden Sabers in terms of accuracy and reliability ...[/quote]I, too, have heard that a .38/9mm is the minimum that one should use for self defense and I've also heard that a .380ACP is the minumum as well (this was was more popular several years ago before all of the compact 9mm's and lite J-frames started coming out and a lot of LEOs carried a .380 for back-up) and I've also heard that if you're serious about self defense, you shouldn't carry anything smaller than a .40 caliber (.40S&W, .45ACP, etc.).

To be perfectly honest with you, all of this is relative in my opinion. You can shoot one person with a .25ACP and they will stop all forms of aggression because [1] they are in some serious pain; and [2] they are thinking "oh my gosh, I've been shot, I might die, I need help, I don't want to be shot again" (believe it or not .25's KILL more people than the bigger calibers).

Then you've got situations, such as documented by Capt. Massad Ayoob (an active police captain), where a person takes three center of mass hits with a .45ACP and still has some fight left in him.

Bigger is obviously better but my wife's home defense gun is a .380 (a 14-round Browning BDA380) and I'm not worried about her being underarmed when I'm not home. She can shoot it much more accurately than she can any of my larger calibers and a center of mass hit with a .380 is better than a miss or a near miss with something bigger.

You can try the various Mag-safe ammo's whose ad's claim that they give a .380 the stopping power of a .357mag (or some claim similiar to that). I don't have any personal experience with this type of ammo but it has been discussed here before with opinions being evenly divided -- consequently, I decided to stay away from it. You can do a search and read the threads yourself and draw your own conclusions. At least for me, there were enough negative things said to put doubt in my mind, but again, I don't have any actual experience with it.

Finally, my wife has her BDA380 loaded with Golden Sabers & Silvertips (I'm very big on alternating ammo every other round -- this has been discussed in older threads as well, with some members thinking that it's a good idea and others qustioning it's "wisdom"). Regards,

Patton,
From your post I suspect George was making reference to the PCP (pocket carry package) from Scott, McDougal and Assoc. SM&A does wonderful things with the little Colt 380s as well as turning out some nice custom 1911s.
For the PCP SM&A hones all the sharp edges off the gun, enhances the sights, or for an additional cost they can add Novaks. They also add their steel recoil spring guide rod and an enhanced slide stop among other modifications. To check it out in more detail, check out the SM&A web site at http://www.colt380.com
While I havent had a Colt 380 modified by SM&A, they did a really good job on customizing my Colt Officer's ACP.

Thanks Mark - Your right on the money. That is indeed what I was refering to. These guys are the undisputed Pocket Colt Gurus.
I have associates that showed me some stuff that came back... amazining. After about 7 years - they STILL have them and refuse to sell them. They are the ones to keep.

Hi, folks,

1. There is no such thing as a free lunch or a guaranteed one-shot stop.

2. I have called for volunteers to let me shoot them with the calibers they denounce as "puny" or "ineffective" or "worthless". No takers.

On the contrary, provided you hot your target badguy center of mass, there ARE weapons that will guarantee a one shot stop:

1. Shotshell round for 40mm grenade launcher.

2. White Phosphorus round for the same. He may not die immediately, but he'll be too busy burning to be a threat.

3. Six inch naval gun.

4. Tactical nuke.

5. Fuel-air bomb.

Oh, wait a minute, you meant stuff we can actually carry? Never mind..... :)

90 Grain hyrda shocks are VERY destructive little bullets. You may have to polish the feed ramp of your Pony to make them work but YIKES are they good at what they do.

I'd stay away from +p stuff, shoot standard pressure loads. If you want a 380 +p, buy a Pocket 9.

Mac Scott's shop does EXEMPLARY work.

I've not had a gun done by them, but I have had shot quite a few.

I keep meaning to send them my K9 to have it recoated, Kahr's parkerizing is next to worthless, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Mac is a good guy. I've known him via cyberspace (the old Compuserve Firearms Forum) since 1992.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Mac Scott of SM&A did my Colt Mustang Pocketlite, their web site is http://www.colt380.com

Here's a picture of my Mustang and my NAA Guardian, SM&A did a PCP on both of them.

And the Pocket 9 is not that much bigger than the pony and in a bigger mouse caliber... ;)

Jim Keenan - tell you what - you can shoot at me with a .25 any day you like.
I just get to shoot back with my .45! :D
