Generic 8mm Neck size dies?

I have a Hornady 6.5mm neck size die that can be used for any 6.5mm cartridge, the body is pretty short, and the case body isn't a factor.

This one: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/275521/hornady-custom-grade-new-dimension-neck-sizer-die-65mm

For some reason, Midway lists it as for .260 Rem, but the description says "Fits:
6.5 Carcano, 6.5 Jap, 6.5 Mann/Schoe., 6.5x55 Swede, 260 Rem"

I want the same thing for 8mm, I want to be able to neck size both 8X57 and 8X56R with one die, but Hornady doesn't seem to make an equivalent in 8mm.

My search is coming up empty, is there such a thing from any manufacturer, or do I need to buy two sets of dies?

Thanks,

My favorite forming die is the 308 W, it is my favorite because it is short. The other advantage to the 308 W die is the case body is larger in diameter than other cases. The 308 W chambers can not be cleaned up with the 30/06 reamer.

And then there is the 243 W forming die, it is my second most favorite forming die for the same reasons listed.

To get the same benefits from a 8mm die I would have to purchases an Ackely Improved die because the Ackley Improved chamber is larger in diameter.

A friend build a 7MM wildcat and broke his reamer before he got around to making dies for the chamber; so gave him a 7mm Remington Magnum seating die, the Remington Mag chamber is larger in diameter than his wildcat.

Not a high demand item, I would expect. Odds are good you won't find one as a commercial item.

Which means, you will have to have one made. Made from scratch is kind of expensive. One possible solution is to find an old 8mm sizer die, (check gunshows, estate sales, yard sales, etc. and have a bit of the die bottom turned off to allow the shorter case to reach the neck portion of the die.

HOWEVER, I just checked an old reference, the only 8x56R I can find listed is the Hungarian Mannlicher round, and it says that round uses a .329" diameter bullet. IF this is correct (and I have no idea if it is) then a one size neck sizer for both rounds 8mm Mauser (.323" bullet) and 8x56R (.329" bullet) probably would not work well for one of the rounds.

My book says you can use .323"bullets in the 8x56R but accuracy is poor.

Good luck!

Thanks.

Hornady and Privi both make .330 bullets for the 8X56R I suspect that the neck sizer would work fine, particularly if I use boat-tailed bullets (which the Privi is). May overwork the neck a little though.

I can buy a 8mm Mauser neck die from RCBS for about $30, probably not worth the effort (and expense) if an off the shelf item doesn't exist.

That being said, the cases are nearly the same length 57 v 56mm, I may be able to make it work with the Lee Collet dies for 8mm Mauser. I know of people who neck size 7.62X54R using a .303 British Collet die, so while not ideal, it could work.

Depends if the case fits inside the die body, and where the neck begins compared to the Mauser.

Hmmm.

Thanks for the replies.

It works for those two because they use the same bullet (.312") and the difference in case neck size at the mouth is only 0.002"

The difference between 8mm Mauser and 8x56R is much greater. Case mouth is .353" (8mm Mauser) and .365" (8x56R).

Where you would also run into trouble is using a die 8mm Mauser body, the 8x56R is .473" at the shoulder, and .491" at the base. The 8mm Mauser is .443" at the shoulder, and .469" at the base.

SO, the body of the 8x56R will NOT fit into an 8mm Mauser sizer die, (unless you want to size it down to 8mm mauser size!

You COULD find a used (Cheap) 8mm sizer die, and have it shortend a bit and "honed out" to take the 8x56 case, but if you already have an 8x56 sizer die, there's no point to it that I can see.

From here, it looks like a die for the 8x56R will not size the neck of an 8mm Mauser enough, and an 8mm Mauser die will size the 8x56R case too much (too small).

The collet die MIGHT have enough adjustment, I don't know. If it does, you will probably still have to adjust it for each caliber, before use.

Good Luck!

I use a .308 Win collet die to reload 7.62X54r (use a washer as a spacer between the shellholder and die body to account for the longer 54R case) and load .312 bullets without a problem. Boat tails make it pretty easy to seat, they act as an expander plug when you seat them.

The reason I mentioned the .303 collet die is the 7.62X54 is a little shorter than the 303, so when using the collet the whole neck doesn't get resized, just the top 3/4 or so. It would be the same with the 56R, provided there is enough clearance in the 8X57 die body for the fatter case to fit.

Yeah, the .007" bullet diameter is more than the difference than the .004" with the .54R, .004" is the same in the variation between the 6.5 Carcano (.268") and all the other 6.5mm bullets (.264) the Hornady die says it will fit.

Kind of academic at this point, I still have quite a bit of surplus ammo for the 8X56R, and I am not in a hurry to start loading for it, but was putting a Midway order together and was hoping there was something else I could use.

Thanks.
