General revolver questions

My S&W model 10 has some holster wear on the top. It came that way because I baught it used and it was once an LEOs duty gun. The blued finish just shows some bald spots at the top. Is it worth getting it re-finished? How much would someone charge for doing so?

Also, if eventually the bore rifling begins to wear and accuracy drops, can the barrel on a revolver be changed? Or does the gun simply need to be retired at that point?

Thanks for any help.

One suggestion- see if your local gun store has any blueing pens. They look like a sharpie marker and work well for small spots, etc. If you sent the gun off to be re-blued, it'd cost about 100 bucks on average. It'll also make the old model 10 almost worthless, unless you send it back to S&W and let them do it.
And yes, you can replace the barrel. I doubt you'll ever have to, though. I'm still shooting a Victory model from the 1940s and there's no major signs of anything going wrong in the barrel.

Yes, they are worth refinishing because they are such good guns. I would not refinish it though until serious rust started to forum or it started to look really bad. The original finish on the older model 10's is really nice and you'll have to pay S&W a good penny to get a nice blueing job like that again. I'm not even sure they would do as good a job nowadays.

It'll also make the old model 10 almost worthless,

Tell that to all the gun dealers who have old 10's with easy bake refinish jobs who think they're gonna get at least $295 for theirs.

Character. A scar is a tattoo with a better story. I would look at the blue pens. They work for awhile. If rust is your concern, wax works. Turtle wax is my choice. I also have a Victory model S&W that is fine. I even have a beat up Colt DA 38 from the black powder era with a fine 6" barrel. I have yet to meet a firearm that wasn't repairable with enough money.

>>Also, if eventually the bore rifling begins to wear and accuracy drops<<

That will probably not happen during your lifetime. :)
