It wouldn't be a bad idea to carefully review the manual for the firearm, paying particular attention to any safety issues. Be sure you know how it works, and how to recognize when something goes wrong, e.g., a stuck bullet in the bore.
Remember the rules:
1. All guns are to be considered loaded at all times; never take anyone's word to the contrary. Clear the firearm each time you handle it, even if you've passed it to another just for a moment. They may have loaded it for you.
2. Finger off the trigger until the moment of firing
3. Be certain of your target and what's behind it
4. Do not point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy
Be cognizant not only of hardware (firearm, ammo, magazines, cleaning gear), but also software (what you have in your head: knowledge, attitude) and warmware (the living things within your purview).
